Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing a hard kick/ jerk when I put the car in gear. P to D, P to R and even P to N.
It usually happens when I do plenty of city driving and it happens more often the more I drive during the day.
I went to Mercedes for diagnostics, I had the transmission fluid replaced (which was due anyway with service B at 125000km) and nothing has changed.
The car shifts smoothly after all so it’s probably not a transmission problem.
They also checked engine and transmission mounts and they are ok. They say the car has no issues but I’m pretty sure there is one.
I was also unlucky enough and the car didn’t do it when they checked it.
Anyone that can help me figure this out?

Did you take your car to the garage when it was hot as you say the problem occurs when hot.
Mounts loosen up when hot as they expand and it does sound like a mount.

Hmmm... P->N gives a clunk?

Try this.
When parking stop, apply parking brake, N, foot off brake, P.

Then when getting set to drive off foot on brake, parking brake off, P->D.

Sounds like the park pawl is under load and the clunk is the park pawl releasing. Totally normal and a symptom of the parking sequence used allowing the car to move after P is engaged.

I must admit, I park by stopping on the normal road brake, selecting N, making sure the foot/handbrake is fully engaged, then selecting P.

Theofox, do you park on a hill normally? Or does it do this on the flat too?

What car?
Yes, this important.

Usually this is a sign of the selector module failing, and the box operating in failsafe mode mechanically only, but, depends on the box!
Could be mounts etc but not usually that harsh.

P to N but also D to N but it isn't a clunk it is more like 2 components slamming into each other

unfortunately I didn't manage to bring the car hot to the garage, I might need to try that

I also put the car in neutral then engage the parking brake then P. It happens regardless of the angle of the road
