HI!

I drive a 1997, E 200 and last year it started to thump out of 1st gear into 2nd. Sometimed even from 2nd into 3rd.

The thumps were often so powerful I'd feel the rear wheels loose traction for a sec! On gravel it would skid for a sec.

I was advised to do a range of things by a range of people from the authorised Mercedes agent / dealer (overhaul) to a gearbox speacialist (service the box).

I finally had it looked at by yet another specialist and he said he suspected it was a pressure problem caused by a defective / old solenoid. So, he changed my valve body (heat plate?) which had all 5(?) solenoids. It was ok for a bit and almost a year later it has started thumping again if I dont allow the warmup run in the mornings (run in 1st at 2000 revs/m till she slips up smoothly). I read in the manual that the box would hold low gears, till the box reached operational temperatures, for a rapid box heat up.

Advice, opinions or suggestions? I saw a note by "television" on reducing the oil levels. Would this not expose the box to a host of other problems, like burn out?

Hi.

Interestingly I have to take the car to the authorised agents as the car doesnt have a dip stick..............its only with teh agents.

But I will. Should I top up if low or remove a little if its ok?

Have you checked the level?

Your Mercedes
2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
This info only applies to manual gearbox cars and not automatic,, You can check your self with a length of curtain wire.

When warmed to 80c go from D to N a few times and in P it should be around 5.6cm up the curtain wire
