Hi,
I am a new member and have been reading the problems re C class 'front ends'. I have a 2003 Sport Coupe 220 CDi Evolution and I am plagued by a low level vibration/harshness felt through the steering wheel. I have swapped the tyres (Continental Sport Contact 225/45 17 run at 30 psi) front to back but it makes no difference. The tyres are wearing evenly with 4mm on the fronts and 6mm on the rears. I had the wheel bearings checked by an MB inde and he said they were fine. He also said that a low droning noise that decreases when the car slows down is caused by wear on the discs but they did'nt need replacing until pad wear warning light comes on.

Any ideas out there please as it is really beginnihg to irritate me!

Thanks:

Does the vibration only occur when the car is moving?
If so does it become progressively worse with speed?
Does it become better on the overrun? (No accelerator used)

Hmm, drone caused by worn discs? Not come across that one. Normally go for worn hub bearings or diff. for that.

Is your car automatic or manual?

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
If it drones up to 2k revs could it be the Valeo problem on the gearbox

The brake droning will only come into play when ur actually braking heavily and you will know it is associated with braking.....I would agree with malcolm and have the coolant/gearbox oil checked immediately

Thanks all - the car is auto - vibration only occurs on the move, does not become worse with speed, not better on the over-run - the drone reduces in tempo as car slows if the gearbox in put into neutral and I coast but don't brake.

What is the Valeo gearbox problem?
