When I was in my late 20,s up until my mid 40,s my driving was somewhat erratic always racing away from traffic lights or overtaking when I shouldn’t foot always pressing hard on the pedal luckily not many speed cameras or radar guns to get caught. But since my 60,s and now in my 70,s I can’t be arsed with all that I keep up with traffic and I see a young tear away wanting to fly past I think ****ing idiot, oh how times change.

Yep entirely agree. I am approaching 70 and find some of the driving these days appalling and then I remember back in the day I was just as bad - if not worse!! As you get older you realise you are not immortal.

These days I just waft about in the Volvo. Occasionally, I may swap to sport mode, stop on a quiet A road and give it a bit of welly - naturally, up to the legal limit ..

That doesn't mean I'm not a positive driver, especially round Town but, the standard of driving these days leaves so much to be desired I leave them all to it..

On motorways, they zoom past and then a few miles on I pass them again, still at my same constant speed.. Same at the lights, you just meet them at the next set after they zoomed off previously...

I don't drive particularly fast anymore but I don't like to hang about either. I love owning the V8 and occasionally I'll boot it down you know, just for fun! That's the summer car. The all year car is a Ford Hybrid nowadays so it doesn't lend itself to hooning about and certainly isn't brimming with untapped power! I did drive quick as a young driver though. I am also an advanced driver having completed Driver Instructor Training some years ago and teaching for a couple of years - that training stays with you and I do notice the silly mistakes of some drivers. I'm still far from 100% perfect, but still drive as I was trained to which is to always expect the unexpected and try to anticipate events several steps ahead.

It's got to the point in my neck of the woods that there is very liitle opportunity to press on a bit, even if you wanted to. Roads are congested, normal , average speed and mobile cameras proliferate and the Police are using some very disguised unmarked cars. Plus like others have said I too am knocking on a bit so driving a bit more conservatively (without doing the 30mph on normal roads and 50 mph on motorways which many older drivers seem to adhere to!).

Best way to learn to drive is on two wheels the mantra being trust no one and hawkish observation.

Absolutely pointless trying to push-on with our now over populated roads occasionally I use a spirited burst of acceleration and that’s about it nice to hear the IL6 spool up though.

If you want to test the limits of a car track days are the best alternative but that’s a whole new world of commitment and expense

I suppose the novelty is still there for me as I've only been driving my own car for 4 months at this point and before that a slow manual instructors car. I generally only put my foot down on empty roads at night but boy the rush when those turbos kick in is intoxicating.

I only did 15,000 miles in the cars and 10,000 miles on the bikes last year. Need to do better this year…;)
I often did 100,000 a year, now down to much less than 20,000. I doubt you could do 100k a year now on todays roads without driving 24hrs a day.

I a mixed driver really, since getting the S63 I like to sit back relax maybe have a massage or 2 play some nice music through the burmister, but then there's other days I like to stick it in sports mode amg suspension setting and give it some hammer and perhaps be a little anti social. ;).
motoways I stick it to 65mph and love the v8 just gurgle away barely hitting 1200rpm. still only achieve about 28mpg tho

I think driving more "grown-up" vehicles helps.

Back in the day - Capri 2.8i, Renault 5 turbo, Citroen BX Gti 16v, etc.

Now - Mercedes E320 CDi, Mercedes E320 Coupe CDi, Mercedes CLS 350d.

Ironically, the diesel Mercs are probably faster cars than the earlier "boy-racer" ones :)

I started off with several British Leyland cars with 1.3 A series engines and now I have a 3 litre V6 twin-turbo which suits my driving style much better . I do use the performance to overtake safely, although usually only because the car in front is doing significantly less than the speed limit. And I often find it difficult to resist the temptation to put some yob, driving in a bog standard car or van, in his place when he thinks he is in a F1 car and wants to race from the lights. Like OP, I’m in my 70s so I don’t think age has anything to do with it - I’ve always been like this!
