It does look a very nice car :D

I hadn't realised that the market was slow right now. We sold our Austin Healey on the first day we advertised it a couple of weeks ago. That is of course a very old, thirsty, money pit of a car, but we had lots of people after it and got a good price for it, so not sure if it's true that people aren't willing to buy cars that are expensive to run.

We have also just bought another big engined car that had only been on Autotrader for a matter of days when we put a deposit on it. There were, apparently, another 8 people who wanted to view the car too.

Hope you sell it quickly. I guess selling a car is a bit like selling a house, you just need that one person that is looking for what you are selling :D

Can you all just stop blowing sugar up the OP's backside. The car hasn't sold, has AFAIK not had any serious enquiries ergo it is the wrong price.

A car is worth what someone is willing to pay, no more, no less.

@ the OP: Nice car, I wish I had the funds. :D

We must have posted at the same time roadhog :D

I know very little about SL500's, maybe there are lot of them on the market right now? I know when we were looking for our latest car we were very particular about which model we wanted and whilst there weren't many of the spec we were after the market seemed flooded with lower spec cars that were just sitting there day after day

At the same time of the year, 3 years back I had my 1999 car for sale, it only generated one reply in 6 weeks. SL's are not a run of a mill car, and a specialist market. My car was mint and fully loaded with low miles and priced under all others for sale at the time

We had 3 people looking for one 3 months ago, they bought and no one has asked since. the only thing that this car does not have is the electronic ignition and the price asked reflects that

I agree totally, and would add that if anyone here thinks it's an incredible bargain then they should buy it straight away before someone else beats them to it.

I'd love a car like that but can't justify paying that much bearing in mind its age & running costs.

You seem to miss the point that very few of these cars are used as everyday cars. Most owners like the majority on this forum run them as a second car. I think that I could name 20 that do that

This car may be slightly different to mine, but only in respect of mileage.

I have had my 1994 car for 5 years and the running costs have been less than a car on quarter of it's age. Used as a car for leisure motoring and holidays it gets nigh on 25 mpg overall and gives excellent performance.

So don't be inhibited by age or the 5 litre engine. Judge cars like this on their condition - many have a great deal still to offer.

Indeed Alex I only saved 3-4 MPG when I changed from a 320 to a 500, and most want the 500 for the fun that it offers

I'm not knocking the car but the question was whether it was overpriced not whether it was a nice car and how many uses it has.
Fact is it hasn't sold or even got much interest so, for the current market at least, it's sitting at the wrong price. In a different market it would sell for more.

How does one get the message across that this is not a 203 180,,it is a specialist car that only sell well at certain times of the year, it is a 2 seater car not very suitable for carrying children in, even dropping the price may make no difference,,yes when its cheap enough a dealer will buy it and sit on it till the spring and get a few £k out of it. We do nor know the OP financial position or other

It would to me, I might buy it.

So how can we advise him on price then? A car is worth what someone will pay for it and you sell at a price you can afford depending on how much you need or want to get rid. If you need to sell then be prepared to drop the price, if not then sit on it and wait for Mr Right to turn up.

If it was my car (and I do know my financial position) I'd keep it. :)

I think that the OP just sits it out,, they start moving again at the end of Nov,,lowering the price does not guarantee a sale either,,unless you are wanting to pick up a bargain ;) I will tell you that there is a huge difference between a bad one and a good one,, I know as I have looked at a few this year

I have been following this thread with interest and have to say I think the car is overpriced.

Lets face it, the car is one of the earlier models with over 100K on the clock which will put a lot of people off, even though it shouldn't as we all know these engines are bullet proof.

That said, you only have to scan through Autotrader, ebay etc and you will find dozens of them, some with much lower mileage and newer models for less than the OP is asking.

If you need to sell it you have to be reralistic and lower the price to somewhere around £4750 with a view to taking £4500 IMHO.

If you don't need to sell it then hold out until next spring/summer and you might get lucky.

Nice car by the way! Good luck with selling it.

If I had the room for another car I would be knocking your door down with £5,250 in pound notes. It looks a beaut. I see that the less well informed have mentioned the magic 100,000 figure, should be just about nicely run in now ready to do another 100,000

A mint version of these fine cars will always be better than one with a few blemishes,, you can never get them back to how they were in some respects. It is little things all over the car and the inside where little scuff marks cannot be treated. it is on a level with a car that has had a dog running around inside,,that car will never be as nice as a dog free example

Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone for their time and opinions. Amazingly shortly after posting this I have had a lot of interest in the car! A couple of potential buyers have come directly from the forum, and a few from pistonheads.
I am trying to arrange a couple of veiwings this weekend and maybe even a third might come through so fingers crossed I should secure a sale!

Yes we have sent a few member to your post,,you may have to accept a little lowering of the price to allow for the time of the year, but you only need 1 buyer

Well done! It just goes to show that a little bit of exposure to the right sort of people who are likely to either be interested themselves or know someone who is, has significantly upped your potential for a sale.

Please let us know how it goes with your prospective buyers :D
