How old's your car ? We're assuming the bulbs are fitted correctly (there is one specific angle , anywhere else and the light beam does all over the place)

1.Over time, you can get dust/condensation on the lens and reflector that inhibit light performance - in particular if the silvering on the reflector as started to corrode, you really need new units.

2. Another favorite is the dip/main switch, where arcing and age can start to build resistance on the contacts and you don't really notice coz it's happening so slowly over time - clean with a tiny bit of smooth emery and switch cleaner (or WD40)

3.Also, check and clean fuses/and electrical conections as it doen't take much resistance to drop the current to a level where lights are visibly dimmer that normal. To check this, run a lead from the battery to the + side of the bulb and see if it gets any brighter.(don't try this unless you know what you are doing - not being patronising, but you don't wnat to earth a live unfused lead as you will see fireworks at the least and injure yourself )

Both your Main and dipped lighs operate through relays as the switches cannot handle the 10 amp current drawn by these units, the swiches do not go to the lamps direct, a much safer way is to measure the voltage at the lamp its self.
