Having fitted a new battery to my R129 500SL (1996) I have one headlamp wiper blade in the vertical position and one in the horizontal position.
How do I get them to "park" correctly?
Thanks.

I know the workings of the 129 quite well, but this is almost impossible if they are both parking, the one that is vertical must be the incorrect one for the car.

tell me do they both wipe or does the that parks vertical go off the headlamp glass

One of mine occasionaly "parks" vertically although it hasnt really parked... i think it gets bored sometimes. It usually parks properly sometime later so i dont worry about it. To check the wipe pattern just pull the blade back to the 90 degree position and watch it - if it parks wrong then undo the the nut and pull the arm off and push it back on the spline to give the correct park position.

OK David has thrown a different light on it, so one may be lazy, it might pay you to take them off before the winter and clean, regrease, and put contact lubricant on the parking switch, I you want to know how to take them off, just ask. :)

Thanks guys. It is an intermittent fault and I have, in the past, seen both blades in the horizontal position so I'm inclined to agree with the "lazy" notion.
Any other info is gratefully received.

as stated
If they are still the same as on the W126 then the only way you can have a lazy wiper is surely an intermittant electrical fault.

I purchased a second hand unit to replace a duff one, and tried it attached to a battery before having it fitted.
Is it always the nearside that goes? It was also with my SEC.
Nearside, means dropping the bumper and removing strip through which it pokes and removing the headlamp unit to which it is attached.

Annoyingly, having taken apart the casing just to check that it was well greased (this is not easy without destroying the lips that engage in the case) I inadvertently pulled out the drive pin. In returning it I failed to consider where it fitted together with the worm drive.

Job done, I have a wiper which does make the correct movement and has to settle in an upright position.

Can only think that your unit has somehow disengaged from the worm drive to cause a similar setting problem, but??

To keep the motor case together had to put in small screws and two cable ties. Could have glued for permanence I suppose. Good job I didn't. it's on my list to pull apart sometime.

As an aside to this thread, my nearside Headlamp wiper is not working, how is it accessed please? Does the headlamp need removing?
