Hi - My CLK Conv has lost the lighting around the right hand heater distribution control and the right hand heater thumb wheel. Is this an easy job to tackle myself? I suspect that the rotary knobs just pull off but what next...?

I have replace one in a W124, but that 10 years ago.

Back then I was afraid to even take the dial off. But for the life of me, I cannot remember how I too the unit itself out.

It must have been fairly simple, if I did it myself.

Maybe someone else here will give the proceedure

Disaster.... I removed the rotary dial and replaced the bulb with no problems at all. But when I pushed the rotary knob back on something broke and now I cannot select any other setting and the knob just falls out!.... Always two steps forward three steps back.

Any suggestions?

Hi Fellow - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I need to get access to the heater controls behind the wooden fascia - Do you know how to remove the wooden fascia?

Done a similar job on E280 around 4 months ago!

To remove wooden facia:

Check above radio for 2 screws in wood on lower inward slope & remove, or as in my case E class, these screw were later not used - & wooden facia just fixed in place by 2 large nuts behing each heater (arrowed knobs) which just pull off.

Used long nose pliers carefully to release large nuts.

Pull wood carefully from lower edge towards you & un-slot or pull gently down untill lip at top is free.

Switches & other stuff are not fixed to woodwork which is just a cover.

Next to get to bulbs for thumbwheels, locate flat edge in clear plastic surround (covering bulbs) & pry off or unclip from retaining channels and bulbs just pull off or out of sockets, just be carefull not to drop the little bleeders!

Get some sellotape & double over on itself to use as a sticky removal tool, by putting tape either side of bulb & pushed together above to form a handle to pull by.

After this you should be able to see how heater control can be removed if this is broken as you have said.

Hope it helps, & hope its the same as your CLK.
