Hi all. I have never quite known exactly how my van blower system works. Mayhaps someone can enlighten me.
Sprinter 208d lwb no air con.
I have three controls
1. The temprature control has varying temprature guide from hot through to not quite so hot! What i mean is a red line that is thicker at top of range and thinner at bottom of range but no instance of blue (cold) just varying degrees of hot. Even in the winter and at the lowest heat setting i get hot air.
2 My blower switch has 1,2,3, and 4 options for strentgh of blow but if you push the control in a red light on it illuminates and the air blows stronger. Whats that about? Is it simply a confusing 5 setting?
3. The direction control. This has all the usual options; up down recirculate etc but the option to let air blow through straight from the main inlet still blows hot air even if it is minus 1 outside. I realise this problem and number one are related but just letting you have the full picture.

Hi,

The temp control should work like any other you are used to..Clockwise towards the red gets hotter, anit-clockwise away from the thick red gets cooler until air entering at outside temperature only.

The red light on the blower switch indicates that you have switched on to recirculate mode, so that instead of taking air from outside the van and heating it, it takes from inside the van. This is used for faster cab heating in winter and to eliminate smells entering cab when passing a sewage works etc. A way to test if the recirculating mode is working is to verify that air is coming from the vent / windscreen / footwell when moving but without the fan on and if air flow stops once red light is on.

It sounds like the control is somehow stuck on hot all the time to me but I haven't had any problems on mine so I haven't examined how it works. I have encountered this problem over the years and the cure varied by type of system from freeing off a cable, to fitting a new heater inlet valve on the coolant system, to buying a new electronic control box. That one was a climate control though.

Incidentally the air coming from my steering wheel vents and window vents is approx at the same temp as from the windscreen and footwell ones so, as you say, is probably related to the temp being stuck.

Hope this is of help.

Thanks for your help. It is mainly the red light situation i needed clearing up and that you have done. The van runs at normal temp and i not too bothered about only getting hot air.

However, sometimes when i have the blower on 4 and red light on for recirculate the blower cuts out. It starts again if reduce to 3 and after a while 4 and red light will work again but not for long.
