After a 150 mile run, heavily loaded with a caravan in tow, I heard odd noises from under the bonnet when I turned the engine off. The noise, a sort of rattling/buzzing, turned out to be coming from what I think is a heater control valve down between the battery housing and the engine (2002 ML320 petrol), it stopped after a bit of jiggling of the unit
The engine temperature was a little higher than usual, as I said it was loaded, but still less than half way between the 80 & 100 marks on the gauge. Looking at it later I can see an electrical connection under the unit so I suppose it could have been a solenoid stuttering, is this common?
I can't see anything about this valve on t'internet so I took a picture in case I've misidentified the thing, I'd appreciate confirmation of the unit being a heater valve and any suggestions to sort the issue.

Looks like the auxiliary heater pump to me. They have a habit of seizing.
