Hi all In need of some help with heating and temperature gauge on a w212 2.1 auto e class 2012.
So me temperature gauge on the dash started moving up and down So a changed the thermostat and noticed the water pump wasn't the best so a replaced that as well that was 2 days ago.
Everything was fine until today a noticed my heating wasn't blowing hot even though the digital display was on 25 so a changed it to 26 and it came through hot and then even hotter the higher a put the temperature but when a put it to 25 and below it blows cold and my temperature gauge on the dash has started moving up and down again the gauge is reading between 80 and a block and a half above the 80.
The thermostat was from mercedes and the water pump from euro car parts.
Any suggestions thanks.
Graeme

Your thermostat has a heating element, controlled by the ECU, to open the stat when it thinks it will be better for it.
I'm pretty sure there is a calibration actuation on Star for a replacement.

So obviously a don't have star diagnostics so trying to have a good look for leaks because of the common water leak from the fuel filter housing but it was so hard to see.
So a have ended up completely removing the whole lot but am beginning to think that the fuel filter housing wasn't leaking a drained the water system but a still don't no if a have done the right thing because before a removed as much as a could without removing the housing a still couldn't see water any were and a don't no if it only leaked when it was under pressure and hot so do a put it back on or replace with a new 1 to be safe ?.

My guess is that either there is something wrong with the physical cooling system, or you have an 'electrical/sensor' issue.

For the physical cooling system, I would try to rule out:
- that there is no air in the cooling system.
- that the water pump is working correctly (probably okay if you are getting the same symptoms with 2 different pumps).
- that there isn't any obstruction or other physical issue with the water flow, namely the radiator as this is the most common component to die over time. Try to check the outside/bottom of the rad for obvious physical deterioration due to road salt etc.
- what is your coolant like? Clean and fresh, or old-looking and full of claggy green slime?

For the electrical, I would start (if you have iCarsoft, and it sounds like you do) by doing a full diagnostic for codes.
After that, interrogate every temperature sensor during live reading to check for weird or implausible values.
E.g. if all the in-dash temperature sensors are reading e.g. 17°C except one that is reading 55°C, that would be an immediate and obvious place to look.
Same with the engine. Check oil, water, EGT sensors live, and see if there is anything that pops out to you as strange.

Sorry this isn't anything definitive, but if you are prepared to put in your free (£free?) time, it might reveal something?

Thanks very much for the help and reply.

As for the coolant that is brand new and the system was all flushed.

Now as for icarsoft am no computer whizzkid but trying to do what you have suggested with icarsoft is like trying to build a boat with a toothpick lol
A have tried looking for HVAC on icarsoft but can't find it to me it's hard to navigate around it so any help on that would be amazing thanks.
