Is the engine really bad in the E250 - with the amount of horror stories i'm really worried about parting with 10k on a car that might just break!

Not at all. As with any car you hear horror stories from time to time but there are a lot of these cars about we never hear of at all. A good many members run this engine in C or E classes and have never had issues.
The only issues we ever hear about are split intercooler hoses, injector seals, swirl flap issues and timing chains. In that respect they are no worse than anything else and better than some.
There are plenty of E250 and E220 taxis about the place!

Hey John what's road rash?
It’s a ‘phenomenon’ which blights dark metallic cars who’ve travelled lots of motorway miles- fine stone chips if you will- can be reasonably well sorted with ‘Chipex’

Best 40ish mpg (long runs) and worst 25ish (short runs), they will do big miles if properly serviced

Hey wrighty how would I find that out?
Check under the bonnet at the ATF dip stick tube (there’s no dip stick though), if there is a new plastic tab it’s been done..

What's hunter alignment?

Should I be worried if the timing chain hasn't been changed?
4 wheel alignment check , as Mercs are inclined to go ‘off’ and ruin front tyres , usually on the insides
Timing chain is covered by LK....it’s an overhyped issue IMO, loads are fine

You would find the 350 much more refined and smoother. Much will depend on the driving profile you have. Town use will hit the 350 economy harder than the 250. On motorway or open roads there'll be little in it.

John in your honest opinion which one would you go for?
Given what I drive I may not be the most balanced view, but for me the 350 - 3.0v6 is the engine to have undoubtedly !
Silky smooth, responsive and a sublime cruiser...
As LK says it depends on your driving profile really

I have to go on a few b roads from time to time which can be stop start. So I'm guessing the 250 would be better?

The milage wouldn't put you off?
Nope if the service history held up- I.e. regular especially fluid changes and who did it etc...
I see also it’s a one owner from new car which has had higher than average miles - I find that honest and encouraging personally

I'm going to see if I can view it tomorrow. I hope they have the service history available.

One last question John. What fluid changes should I look out for at that milage?
