Hi everyone, my name's Rod and I'm looking to buy a new car .. I've had an '88 325 convertible for 9 years and am looking to finally change .... SLK's are on my (very) short list. A 230K I guess would be the model ... Can anyone give me any tips of what to look out for.. also do all pre face lift models have that big black line on the side under the door ... I'm not sure but some early models look like maybe they are colour coded??? but is that just a kit? .... I'll be looking at '99 or earlier models...

thanks for your help

Of interest the R170 slk (96-04) came second (to the mazda mx5) on warranty claims with 18 claims per 100 cars (coupes and roadsters) . Its in the latest What Car (august) page 169

the bodies were coloured coded from 2000 onwards. this is also when they dropped in the 2lrt supercharged engine.

the interior changed to machines aluminium rather than the fake carbon fibre effect of the first models as standard.

Take the plunge and but one you won't regret it! bought one for the wife 2 weeks ago and can't stop looking at it or driving it! I bought the 230k after much reading some will tell you to go for the 320 v6 cause it's smooth but you get near enough the same performance with the 230 only better fuel consumption. Motors are pretty bullet proof as it's old proven technology just make sure it has a full service history. If your budget stretches go for a 2000 or later model (facelift) seats are much better sits a bit lower and looks a bit sharper. also check the roof goes up and down smoothly in about 30 secs not really many faulty with it just but one and enjoy! can't beat it in the nice weather:)

Hi

I had the same dilemma, but bought a 230slk Kompressor on '97 plate......................and loving it! It's an eye catcher, everyone looks at em, despite what people say about seats in the newer version, they are very comfortable. pleasure to look at, pleasure to drive, pleasure to own!:p

pre-2000 SLK

Hi Rod,

To answer your question:

All (UK) pre-facelift R170 SLKs are 2.3 litres supercharged and automatic. Similarly, all of them have black sills unless an AMG body kit has been fitted (these look much nicer in my humble opinion). Post facelift SLKs came with a 2 litre supercharged, 2.3 litre supercharged or 3.2 V6 engine (plus the SLK32 AMG of course) and have body coloured sills whether thay have an AMG body kit or not. I've attached some pre-facelift pix with & without bodykit for comparison.

J.

Would someone like to give me an honest appraisal of MPG's for each model as I'm about to take the plunge myself.

Wife's 230k averages about 28 /29 mpg thats on a 12 mile run to work on mixture on dual carriageway and city driving. If I get a shot of her car on my own it's deff not as ecomonical:rolleyes: however the supercharger sound makes up for it:D I gues it will depend on where you drive and how you drive, average would be between 21 - low thirties but it's the price you pay for driving a decent motor, you pays your money you take your chance:-| buy one you won't regret it......

On short around town journeys - don't bother even thinking the word economy, just sit back and watch the fuel gauge take a dive....:p

I took it to Malvern (from Junc 28 of M1) couple of weeks ago, sat it at 70 on cruise except through the horrid variable speed limites on the M42 grrr.....and I did there and back and a bit of running around down there on half a tank of fuel...round about £22 ish.....pretty damned good I think for a 2.3 supercharged engine!!! :p

Mine's on a 97 plate and seems to be colour coded - it doesn't have a body kit (i don't think) and it certainly doesn't have the thick black band!
