Hi

I'm sorry if this has been done before I wonder if anyone can help me.
I have a 230 SLK 1999 (v-reg) model and would like to get the passenger airbag deactivated.

I'm due a baby in 2 weeks and have been told by my local mercedes dealer they will not deactivate the airbag and I must buy the mercedes baby seat. This seat has a transponder in it which disables the airbag. In the past (i've done a bit of research) there have been problems with the transponders in these seats so understandly I'm nervous about going down this route. Also the mercedes babyseat will not be compatible with my pram wheels etc.

Does anyone know how to or if other dealers are more flexible and willing to disable a passenger airbag in a SLK - or do I have to (boohoo) get a new car?????

Does anyone have any advice to offer??

Thanks

Bluekat

Hi Bluekat

From what I've read there's no "easy" way of doing this. I've got a '99 T SLK and there's a light near the gear stick to tell you whether the airbags are deactivated. If you did go down the car seat route then you'd at least know if it was working properly.

There are a few available on Ebayif your worried about cost, I know a 2nd hand car seat isn't everyones cup of tea. Sorry, I know this doesn't help with your pram problem though.

You could remove the transponder from the MB seat and fix it semi-permanently to the car-seat to allow you to use your preferred baby seat.

Its a total scam - but placing junior in the back gets around it.
If you're worried about not being able to see him/er a suction mirror from halfords for a couple of quid will sort that.

This had crossed my mind. I only hope the previous problems MB had with transponders is solved. You would only know if they were working properly in the event of an accident (ie when it was too late).

DWB! - can't put my baby in the back seat as my SLK doesn't have any back seats :D

Thanks for your replies guys. It turns out my friends dad is a service manager at MB and is looking into it for me to see what my options are.

I waited years to get my SLK and have only had it for 17 months and really don't want to sell it as it is fab. I'll just have to drive my husband's "family car" for a bit and let him loose with my motor.

disable air bag

Hi

Its very simple to do but because of the UK legal system if the dealer disables the air bag, on your instructions and you sign a disclaimer, and then drive down the road and have an accident and your passenger is injured the dealer is liable. why ??????

If you wish to do it yourself or get the local garage to do it you can purchase a resistor from MB which fits into the plug that normally goes into the air bag this then fools the control unit into thinking the air bag is connected.

If you do any work on the air bag circuit's the keys must be out of the car and the batt disconected

another simple way to disconnect the airbag system is to remove the live lead from the battery then remove the bulb in the dash, if the bulb is on then the ars system is disabled and only problem with that is the buld will annoy you "it being on all the time"

Why not just remove the fuse and hope you don't have a bump .Or leave your new child with a neighbour because you don't want them to spew over your interior.

srs

the point of the MB child seat is that it only disables the passenger seat frontal air bag the side air bags and the other passenger bags are still active.

Hi teky what are you on and can I have some ???????
