Hello all,

I know absolutely nothing about cars except how to drive them, and I’m not the best at that either.

For some totally unknown reason, other than it looked classy, had ivory upholstery and was very low mileage for its year (36k), I bought a 2009 S Class 320.

I’ve been doing some basic cleaning, it was an ex chauffeur‘s car apparently but had been left sitting in a compound for years so the paintwork had gone a little dull so gave it a good polish and it looks OK now. However, I like those wooden/leather steering wheels so I bought one on Ebay for £300, waiting for it to arrive. Thought I’d go on-line to see whether I had to go to a Mercedes dealership to get it fitted and came across this forum.

I’ve read on a past thread on here that there could be an air-bag problem? I assumed the one I have in the current steering wheel would just swap over? As I say, I know nothing about cars and apart from slipping a disc into the CD player to upgrade the sat-nav and syncing my mobile with the hands free, I’m totally dependent on garages.

So a question if I may, will an ordinary (non Merc specialist) garage be able to fit the steering wheel and will there be a problem with the airbag?

Sorry to start my introduction message with questions but….

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome

No help with the steering wheel but an Indy MB garage or local one with the right equipment should be able to help?
Someone on here should be able to point you in the right direction if we know your location.

Hi thanks for your reply, I’ve contacted a local mechanic who tells me he’s fitted steering wheels on Merc‘s previously so hopefully he’ll do the job. Had a look on You Tube and whilst I’m not capable it looks fairly straightforward for a mechanic. You just disconnect the battery and replace according to the 2 videos I watched. With the correct tools it should be a cinch, hopefully!
I’m in Cheshire.
Thanks again

I tend to do most work on my cars myself, but airbags and electrics I have been told not touch....EVER!!! I have set fire and burnt out many parts messing with electrics, I can replace a simple fuse and melt wiring :(

Welcome, the main problem with disconnecting a part of the airbag system, is you may get the dreaded SRS warning light which is an automatic MOT failure. It can be re-set by a Merc garage with Star, but this is not always straightforward ask me how I know.

I would speak to a specialist with knowledge of your car before tacking the job yourself.

Thanks Mark, a mechanic who has replaced steering wheels on Mercs previously is doing the job for me but I’ll certainly look out for the dreaded SRS warning light!

Well hopefully the mechanic knows what he’s doing!
