someone please help me...i have a merc e200 auto/petrol{1998}..problem started a few days ago...,had a new battery fitted and didn,t realise the cluster display ,i.e, petrol gauge,rev counter, petrol indicator and ac blower wre all not working...took it to the indie who changed my battery and i borrowed ascrewdriver with voltage tester to test my fuses....fuses seemed ok, but as i have read previously on the forum that windows sometimes need to be reset as they don,t always close/open...i aimed my key fob at the drivers door and kept it depressed for a few seconds..this made all my windows come domn simultaneously..no probs. there..all windows now working fine....however, tried putting my key into the ignition..alas no joy..tried disconnecting battery, negative part only and re-connected..again no joy...called the breakdown people,the mechanic had a go but could not activate the key..and as the car is in a narrow service lane behind some shops, i cannot have it towed to the local mb service centre.....
{only with specalist equipment-cost£240}
the key i have was a new one purchased from mb only last late october at a cost of £200.....can anyone suggest what i can do...would mb still guarantee my key?...........all these probs. arouse after battery change...please help someone.....

This will not be a scorpian on a 1998 car but could be the ignition switch gone

Could be an old alarm system that has kicked in when the battery was reconected

apart from the built in alarm,i dont have any other...in my opinion,i dont think the ignition lock is at fault,reason being, i was playing around with the key fob by keeping it depressed, thats when the key would not turn in the ignition...anyone give me some ideas how to re-activate it...thanks..

hi guys...just had my problem solved..apparantly couple of fuses had blown when battery was changed..a friend of mine just came over from london{i live in slough}..and he checked over the car {in driving rain--most awful of days today}...after trying some of the more complicated theories, he thought he ,d check the fuses..2 of the fuses had blown,they were replaced and hey presto, everything works fine.... just goes to show, if the recovery vechicle had taken my car to the local mb dealer ,no doubt,it would have cost me an arm and leg...
thanks to all the relpys...
