Good evening all. I have a 2007 cl500 and I am hoping i can get some help from you. I was driving on the motorway today and put my foot down to overtake a slower car. All of a sudden the car stalled and i had to coast into the hard shoulder. Started the car and put it into drive but its not driving. Tried reverse but nothing too. Its going into neutral and park fine. Got it recovered to my home. I have to call RAC warranty on monday and see what they can do for me. Abd also speak to my merc specialist who services the car for me. In the meantime i hope someone could hve an idea of whats gone wrong and let me know if i am facing big bills. I must add that when it happened i was just coming from the garage where i just had the car straight piped(resonator delete and backbox delete) but i dont think this has anything to do with my breakdown as the car drove fine for an hour or so. Thanks for your help.

it certainly sounds bad , I think you will need it plugged into with star to find the answer , but it reads like a possible torque convertor failure and hence why the car stalled , it does still start and run ok right ?

Check ATF level.

Maybe the electroplate? If it did it ‘quietly’ maybe it’s electrical or torque converter?

Yes it still starts and runs ok. If it turns out it is a torque converter is that an expensive job?

yes it happened quietly as the car kicked down gears. It was just kick down and then stall with no strange noises.

Yes the did some welding under the car to replace the resonator and back boxes with a pipe.
Given it drove an hour before the problem it's unlikely related to welding work.
My pick would be lost ATF fluid.

I'm not a very mechanically minded person, the most i know is how check the engine oil. Is there a guide on how to check atf? I tried researching online but all i can gather is you have to buy a dipstick online and that car has to be a certain temperature before you check the ATF. I guess i will wait and see what the specialist says tomorrow. My biggest fear is being told its a major problem that will cost thousands when it could only be a small problem. Its happened to me before with a bmw 645ci where i spent over a thousand pounds on a problem that was eventually fixed with an IVM module that only cost £200.

If you have a 7g gearbox ,it is fill from below with no dipstick tube in the engine bay (that is the 5g gearbox) . It will really require an MB Indy to check the atf level
