w222 S550 2014
Greetings from Austin, TX... I am looking for any guidance/direction on an issue with the pano roof on a 2014 S550 (W222) with 19K miles (car was in Hawaii before so mileage is low). This is my first post, and it is a doozey, so please hang on and read all the way through. Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance and I am excited to be part of the community!

Chapter #1 - Everything was working fine with the pano sunroof until I tried of open the rear pano shade with the trunk open. After that, the rear pano shade stopped working. The front sunroof and shade worked fine. I read some posts (after the fact) saying that if you open the pano roof or shade with the doors or trunk open it can cause problems.
Chapter #2 – I went to the footwell fuse box and removed what I think is the correct fuse for the rear pano shade and then put it back in – no change. The fuse was number 319 and the online diagram labels it as “Panoramic sliding sunroof control module: Panoramic roof roller sun blind control module”. Since there was no change, I then went and removed fuse number 317, which the online diagram labels as “Panoramic sliding sunroof control module: MAGIC SKY CONTROL control unit”. Unfortunately, when I popped that fuse out with a screwdriver and it fell into the area in the footwell where the fuses are and I couldn’t find it (yes, wrong tool, I now know better). Despite that mishap, I wasn’t too worried since I had a MB appointment this week to give the car a once over before a 2,500KM road trip we are taking next week.
Chapter #3 – I get a call that my car is ready. Service guy said the tech ran diagnostics on the pano roof ($200) and that the notes say the motor/s needs to be replaced... estimate is $2,200.
Chapter #4 – I am shocked and upset. I thought they were just going to do a factory reset or something. I wasn’t 100% sure about the rear pano shade, but I thought for sure the front would be fixed since all they had to do was replace the fuse.
Chapter #5 – I go to the dealer yesterday morning and ask to speak with the tech who worked on the car. Fortunately, the guy was kind enough to come out and talk to me. He said he checked this and that, hooked something up to some system, etc., etc... (I'm not a mechanic so I had a hard time understanding). That said, I got the distinct impression that he had no idea what the issue was. I asked if the front sunroof was back to normal and he said no. I couldn’t believe it!! I said that it worked fine... then I took out the fuse (and of course it stopped working)... then you guys replaced the fuse and neither the front sunroof nor the front sunshade works? He said yes, that is correct. He said it has something to do with the ‘proximity sensors’ and that the systems think something is in the way and won’t open... which is not "a motor issue" (which is what I was told originally).
Chapter #6 – I get in the car, start it up, hit the front button to move the front pano shade back.....AND IT WORKS! I step out and ask the tech... "didn’t you say that neither the front pano shade nor the sunroof work"? He said "yes, that is correct". I told him that I just opened the pano shade and worked fine. Do you know what his response was? “I would keep it closed if I were you since you don’t know when it will stop working again” WTF -- I was speechless!! The front sunroof would still not open, nor would the rear pano shade.
Chapter #7 – This chapter is currently being written with help from all of you. I would be grateful and very appreciative of any thoughts, suggestions, or knowledge you can share?

Best, DA
