hi
We recently purchased a 16 plate gl350. We live up in saddleworth and constantly snows. I really thought this would handle well in snow on the roads which are very hilly here but it’s terrible. There doesn’t seem to be a snow setting like the range rovers I’ve had and I’m just wondering whether I’m not seeing the setting. I’ve tried to research it but can’t find anything. Anyway looking for and help or guidance. Many thanks jo-Ann

The best 4x4xfar, what ever the badge, won't get any where in snow with the wrong tyres. My 4x4 R Class just has forward & backwards .... no fancy diff locks or any other setting on the transmission just a throttle pedal that you press relative to the conditions ;)

These were sold I believe with off road settings as an option from new so most therefore don’t have it. As above get winter tyres and the car will be transformed

Ok so I’m use to driving in snow as had range rovers for years and drives great in it with the snow setting on and never had winter tyres ever. So are you saying that if we put winter tyres on this car will have a complete different drive? The farm over the road has a vw touran and a Jeep neither of which have winter tyres on and drive perfectly down our huge hill? I’m just a mum trying to find the safest option for the car for all my babies lol and can’t get my head around why it handles so badly although it’s a 4x4. My husband has an Audi A7 Quattro and it’s far better than this gl????

When you say the car has problems driving in snow , what do you mean ? Does it not get going from stationary , does it not climb hills ??
As said winter tyres will make it fantastic .

What happens underneath when you press the snow setting on the Land Rover? My auto 2 wheel drive Vauxhalls just set off in 3rd when the snow setting was pressed.

As Scottie said ..... you canae change the laws of physics

It’s just all over the place and doesn’t seem to stick to the road and really struggled with a slight incline the other day with not a lot of snow on the road. Sorry I’m not very technical x

Gosh I ha ent got a clue what the snow setting did on the RR I just know it handled on the road fantastically compared to this gl. Felt loads safer to be in.

Do you have a rotary control in the centre console that has 5 settings on it as you turn the controller?

Each position has an outline image of the car with a line, wavy or straight beneath.

From left to right clockwise they are:

Indiv
Sport
Come
A snowflake icon
Just a wavy line

Turn till the snowflake has the light on, click and bobs your mothers brother.

Winter tyres will transform the car, Your car should have super duper electronic controlled traction, which means that when a wheel begins to spin the drive will transfer to the other wheels.
If you are on summer tyres they will just slip and slide in the snow...
The Range Rover with the snow settings, electronically locks the drives and controls the spinning, and most drivers never notice or care how it works.
You can buy decent all weather tyres from around £70 each depending on size, and no need to change back to summer tyres when the snow goes. I'm running on Zeta Azuras, And they are a brilliant all round tyre..(given that all tyres are round...lol.) And about £90 each for 20'' tyres.
Oh and if you have run flat tyres fitted they are much harder and will slip and slide even more.

Sounds like you need a proper offroad 4x4 rather than a street 4x4. None of the Mercedes 4x4's can compete with a Ranger Rover offroad, except maybe the G Wagon. Changing to winter tyres will certainly help.

The GL is more of a lifestyle vehicle than an off road vehicle. If you want to tackle snow etc you’d be better off with a Landrover or Range Rover.

Have a look on You Tube 4X4 summer tyres vs two wheel drive with winter tyres on snow.

The Zetas are here for £90 each, excellent tyre I've had them on 2 X5's and they are the perfect all round tyre. Bought them initially on a set of wheels I bought, and as they were new I decided to see how they performed, and after 15K miles on them I was well pleased with them.
