I am new to this. I am thinking of buying a C 220 CDI Auto Estate. I have been looking at about £18,000 which seems to get an 05/06 car. I have heard about the supposed electronic / software / electrical problems - are they as bad as people say? Any one any advice ?

Early ones did have gremlins, primarily caused by cost cutting around 2000 but MB saw the error of their ways and the problems were well on the way out by 04 and any remaining issues pretty much eradicated at the facelift so an 05/6 one should be fine.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I've had a facelifted late 04 C270CDi Auto estate (so will be same version as yours) for 3 years and it haven't had any problems with it.
One generic problem seems to be that they all drift to the left due to camber sensitivity (it will drift right on right cambered roads) - if you're buying used then make sure you're happy with it during road test.

Mine is Avantgarde model, so is a little lower but it's on standard 16" wheels. I find the ride a bit harsh - not really what I expected from a Merc. I think that it is an estate makes this seem worse.

If you buy one from a dealer you will get a full warranty for a year (and/or any remaining period of the original 3yr warranty).

Depending on your annual mileage and your outlook on life you might want to look at Mercedes ServicePlus once the car approaches 3 years old, or the Approved Used warranty ends. This can run until the car is 6yrs old/120K miles and cover all repairs and servicing. Usually costs not much more than an extended warranty anyway - not cheap, but perhaps useful peace of mind.

Wonder why MB put them throught auction - I would have thought they were prime MB Direct cars?
