Right, started the W124 after a job interview, switched on the lights and the instrument panel was black! All other lights work OK though.

I've wiggled the switch, I've looked at fuses and I'm at a loss.

The instrument panel, heater controls, switches, Electric Window Switches, Sunroof Switch, Headlight Switch, all out.

Has anyone got any ideas?

I'm guessing the switch will need replacing.

Everything imaginable works on the car except the illumination all round (Interior map lights all work though!).

Anyone got any info?

Stu.

There is a little red fuse on the rear of the cluster

What, that does the WHOLE lot?

Electric Window lights, Instrument panel, Heater, rear heater window, hazard light button, headrest, headlight switch and all?

I believe that is the case,,do rotate the dimmer quite hard a few times first

There is no dimmer :-?

But the instrument lights work (Alternator, Check Control and hand brake as do indicator tell tale lights) it's just all the illumination around the car has gone.

Is there any thing else to check before getting the instrument panel out?

The long switch you push in to reset the odometer is the dimmer, try it first else bad luck you have to rack out the instrument cluster or use a Carsoft or MB Star if you got one.

Well, it beats taking the fuse out!

You're a blinder mate! We were ready to start crying!

Problem solved as I was playing with the tripometer earlier!
