Mooching around the car earlier, i think ive run the car long enough now, its time to start the servicing....

I cant find the oil filter, but i dont actually know what it looks like... I found something that looks similar to an oil filter on a civic, but it seems to be in an odd place, which makes me wonder if it actually is....

Cool beans, that looks very easy to get to, On a civic, its underneath the intake, Right pain to get too...

So next questions, i have gallons and gallons of decent 10-40 oil, Will it be ok to use that?

What is the specification of the oil, though back when your car was made we did not have 229.1 oil

Spec of the oil? I didnt really think the engine would notice...

In any case its in a green bottle, CastrolMagnatec 10W - 40 A3/B3 is whats on the front of the bottle...

Its got some more shiz written on the back too, but i dont know if that matters...

So is that ok? Or do i need different numbers to 10-40?

oil filter

As Malc says lovely pictures , the third one especially, with the chisel / screwdriver marks around the base! service history? it can be hard hand tight or the torque setting is on the top! a simple strap wrench should get it off! any 10/40 semi syn, change it at 5k miles!

Looks from your pictures that previous filter changer used a chisel or screwdriver to remove/replace the filter housing cover. The oil spec for my W203 with the same 111 type engine is fully synthetic £34 for 5 litres from Halfords including "free screwdriver set" WOW i new you would be impressed. You can also buy the correct tool from Halfords for about £8.

Hi,
When you change the filter and undue the filter housing remember to change the "O" ring seals that are on the stem of the filter housing, new "O" rings should be supplied with the oil filter.

also id like to add from personal experience, make sure you use a genuine oil filter. ive had many problems with aftermarket ones from factors!

I don't think you will find any o ring seals on the stem. This applies to other models but not yours. I was confused about this until I posted a question recently (maybe on the "other" forum, can't remember). The only o ring seal I had on mine was the big one just underneath the lip of the black oil filter top cover.

While a new plastic cover/cap to replace the damaged one isn't wallet threatening*, the resulting engine damage if one of those cracks grows a bit, allowing oil to spray out would be.

* about £10

Only one o ring and thats on the plastic cap and comes withe new MB filter, only £5.44 from MB + vat. Just changed mine. Remember to remove the dipstick before pulling off the plastic engine cover or you may snap the top off the dipstick (not sure if you have this cover on the W202) good old superglue.
