A4 is a much bigger car than the CLA , why not look at the CLS , stunning car and id argue side by side a few mm bigger than the Audi

A4 is 1826w x 4700L

CLS is 1881W x 4940L

C Class saloon is comparable to the A4

Hello and welcome

Take them for a drive and see which one you prefer. Opinions from a forum aren’t really helpful as we’d pick what we prefer and it’s you that’s going to be driving it.
This.

200mm doesn’t seem much to me, not even a ruler length.

I looked at the c class but it looks a bit old fashioned to me.

Yeah the 180 is a 1.3ltr! The Audi is around a 1.5 but has a similar 0-60 of 9sec.

My current Volvo does 0-60 in around 7 seconds. I’m just hoping the Mercedes or Audi don’t feel slow compared. Would you guys think the 2 seconds is noticeable in everyday use?

Depends upon your driving really, if you’re doing traffic light Grand Prix all the time then yes you’ll notice and probably resent it all the time. If you’re going for mega-miles you won’t notice it at all. Have you driven any of the cars?

They will be very slow, you will be screaming the engine all the time.

What are you wanting from a new car??? Going from a 4x4 to a medium size saloon is a big change

mph really, the 7 seconds from the Volvo has always seemed fine so wondered if slightly slower would bother me.

I am choosing a saloon/coupe because I have found the 4x4 soooooo boring to drive! I don’t think I’ll get a 4x4 again.

the Volvo is much more expensive than these cars but that means I’ve lost a lot more money lol.

a4 and CLA seem to be around 35k to 40k. I’m not keen on getting a second hand car because it’s out of warranty and can be a problem. I usually only keep them 2 or 3 years.

If you buy a car up to a year old then that is no problem, even putting a years warranty on as car is considerably less than the depreciation.

Buying new go through www.carwow.co.uk for the best deal, there are so many nearly new (up to 6 months old) cars out there with massive savings like the ones I posted, would be worth a look, ex demos are also a good buy.

If you go over £40k then the car tax is massive

Keep buying new and keep loosing large amounts of money

Look on Auto Trader, set the search to newest first, loads of MB dealers with 10% off stock cars

Thanks I’ll check that out.

what do you think about car leasing?

is it really cheaper? Because I know if I paid for a lease insurance would then be on top etc, and probably a deposit of a few grand. I’ve never looked into leasing but I hear a lot about it here in the U.K. now.

Leasing is not cheaper than buying out right unless you can get 0% interest.

An excellent way for them to constantly make money...

Popular, as it gives people the opportunity to have a car parked on their drive they’d not normally be able to afford.

Note I said “parked in their drive” that’s because to get the car they want the mileage restrictions are so high they can’t actually drive it...

(unless they “mileage correct” on a monthly basis...)

Our BMW 320d does 7.2 secs 0-60 which seems fine to keep up with modern traffic, and some power in reserve if you need it. More importantly it is x-drive, (4WD) so you can actually put the power down in most conditions without losing traction.

I would not want much less power than that, for daily driving and the cut and thrust of modern traffic.

So the short answer to your question, is the extra 2 secs 0-60 worth having, I would say "yes".

Much depends on the car.
For example my Smart Roadster is 0-60 in 9 seconds. Our E240 is 0-60 in 9 seconds.
The E240 will frequently leave me wanting more power. The smart rarely does as it's much more responsive and has a broader torque spread (high pressure turbo Vs NA).

Our 2 SLs are similar. The older 129 5L rarely makes me feel it needs more power. The newer 230 does.
I suspect the reason here is that although peak torque is higher in the rev range on the 129 the torque down low could be higher. It certainly feels that way.

0-60 times aren't that important unless you like the traffic light grand prix. More important to me is overtaking ability - I want to get round the slow geezer in front of me as fast as I can especially on those 50mph A Roads where the car in front is doing 35... Manufacturers optimising gearing to get the best 0-60 times can lead to some dead spots mid range just when you need it...

Agreed, with 54BHP of raw CDI power my Smart takes a great deal of beating in the 0-20 traffic light grand prix :D:p
