Following the probably terminal issues with my gearbox I'm on the hunt for a replacement car.

Two options: W124 (would mean I can use mine for spares and please Mrs RH no end by having another broken car on the drive :) ) or possibly an early W210 (would mean I get a Turbo engine :) although not sure about the rest of the car.)

Must haves are : 1. Diesel, not CDI as I like the smell of chip fat. 2. Auto box 3. Air Conditioning, not too important if W124 as I could possibly swap the bits over from mine.

Any suggestions welcome. :)

Why not get a 124 cabrio and put your engine in it?

That's not as far fetched as you might think. I always wanted to do that to a CE.

I meant the 124 estate, as I don't much fancy the 210 series.

I would say stick with the 124--I changed (up as I thought at the time to a w210) after 7 years 1991- W124 230TE ownership(which is still running around up here) and then back to a W124 220TE 1994--I soon found out the W210 is only 1/2 the build quality of the W124.

My thoughts too. I never thought of it in terms of trading up, the only reason I'm even half tempted by a W210 is the Turbo diesel.

Questions, questions....

I'm not having much luck, it's slim pickings out there at the moment.
So, weighing up other options, here's just a couple of the questions I've come up with:
1. Which gearbox from which car will fit mine? For instance will a petrol model gearbox fit?
2. Would It be possible to swap the air con system from mine (pre-facelift) to the later (multivalve engine) model?

As always, suggestions welcome. :)

What kind of a/c does your car have? Is it the manual with the round knobs or the automatic with the buttons?

As for the gearbox, why not trying to find a used one?

Too small I'm afraid. I like my cars big. :)

A/C is Diavia, with buttons. I'm also on the lookout for a used box. Just trying to cover all my options.
