Hello
Iwas wondering if you kind folk could help me (and my mum)!

My mum has a beautiful 1982 280SL and sadly after 11 years of loving ownership needs to sell it. The problem is that we have no idea of what price to advertise it for.

It is red and in beautiful condition. She brought it from a mecedes main dealer and has maintained it regardless of cost. It has a full service history and has covered just 60,000 miles. It is always kept in a garage and only bought out when the sun shines although it does have its original soft and hard tops.
The car is in north yorkshire (if that makes a difference!) I will try to get a picture but I live a long way away and my mum isn't on the net so it might take a while.

I know it comes down to being worth what someone is willing to pay for it but if anyone has an idea of value we would be grateful. Also any tips as to where to advertise it would be great.

Thank you
Mark

Have a look on ebay under "cars - classic - mercs", normally quite a few r107 SLs on there.

I would advertise it in specialist classics mags and the Merc Gazette.

The value of any Mercedes of that age is almost totally determined by history & condition. I realise that doesn't help you but bear in mind that values do vary a lot

If it's a decent car then local traders may be interested but they will obviously offer less than a private buyer might

A lot will depend on how much effort you're prepared to put into preparing it & selling it. If the car is squeaky clean, looks sharp and is priced correctly it will sell quickly. The first two jobs are easy and a bit of research here, on Autotrader and in the WH Smiths magazine department will help determine the selling price

If you post decent photos here I'm sure you'll get some suggestions

As it has a hardtop and leather, about £8500. The only problem is that it's the 280 with the old M110 engine which isn't a great engine for power and economy. A V8 car or a later 12v 300SL would indeed make around £10'000.
A lot of the dealers like Jarvis are on drugs with prices which is why their cars stick around for months. Your car has the mileage, colour, spec and history to its credit - a typical '82 280SL is about £4500 worth but most have rust issues and are a bit tired.

I'll tell you what. Since it is a 25 year old car it is getting on a bit. I am more than happy to do you a straight swap for my 260E which is only 18 years old and has comfy seating for five.

Much simpler for you than selling it and you get a newer car for your efforts.

Deal?:D
