Hi MB family.

I've a 05 SLK350, had it for 3 years, do about 3k a year in it. Drives amazingly.

Now and again the engine light comes on but needless to say, won't pass the MOT if it comes on when it goes in for it.

I have done a diagnostic test;-
  • P0444 0851 - purge control open/current switch over permanently closed
  • P0353 0991 - signal fault of coil diag cylinder 3
  • P0051 0060 - continuous camshaft adjustment incorrect position of exhaust camshaft
  • P0024 0521 - diagnosis of tumble flap
I got it tested in Halfords. They have also taken it for a drive and said that they recon something is throwing up false codes as it runs amazingly, great performance. I have done some research, now have decided to throw it out there. Can the last code (P0024) be a common fault that can have a knock on effect to throw up the other codes?

It can go days without the engine light on which also says to me that the codes can not be true issues.

I want to take it to an independent local MB garage, but by the same token would like to be educated and informed before I go there.

Thank you in advance

Paul

Hello and welcome

The M272 engine can have issues with chocolate balance shaft sprockets. Not sure if yours is one that is affected but with your vin number you can do an online check if yours is in the range of engines with the issue. This can and does cause engine issues.

I wouldn’t be taking a Mercedes anywhere near a Halfords.

Hi

I will have to check then, thank you.

I took it solely for the diag test and convenience. It normally goes to the independent MB garage for any work.

P0051 0060 - continuous camshaft adjustment incorrect position of exhaust camshaft
engines up to #2729..30 468933 -- this when the gear is the problem

engines up to #2729..30 759427 -- this when the adjustment solenoids are the problem

engines up to #2729..30 895140 -- this when the adjustment solenoids leak oil

The first two scenarios cause "check engine light", the third is just an oil leak.

Mercedes-Benz with the improved parts have engine serial numbers that are higher than:

  • M272 Engine Serial No. 2729..30 468993
