From memory and I could be wrong so anyone feel free to correct me, the oil fills through the sump bolt hole, engine at temp and running, refill box and any amount over the requirement spills out through the hole.

Hi there,
Regarding your gearbox issues, here goes my experience with my 07 CLS (65K)
When I bought it a month ago I had issues with the way it changed gears in slow traffic; and no issues when happy on the gas :) It felted like imprecise gear changes ie: too soon or too late gear changes (both in Comfort and Sport mode). This happened only on slow traffic
I doubted issues with the gearbox because shifts war fine if I just floored.
I started doubting the throttle pedal, and I noticed a gap in response between 1200 rpm and 1700 rpm ( at idle; in park mode). The response was inconsistent and I was not able to hold still the RPM. Bare in mind that in my case was inconsistent. Over the 2000RPM mark the response was extremely precise.
I thought that make sense, if the computer can not read exactly your throttle pedal intentions then it will not make good decisions to up shift/downshift accordingly.
I bought the acceleration pedal ( £138.76 - VAT included - MA211 300 05 04 - new from MB dealer) and problem solved.
Also, its so easy to change it yourself.
I don't think its worth buying a second hand one. - as mine could be considered good also, but not good enough for me :D

Good luck

Regarding your issue that it will not upshift - that might had something to do with DPF regeneration.

Thank for the heads up. That did cross my mind at one point but I do not feel comfortable just throwing money at it, I mean who wants to do that anyway just for troubleshooting? In the mean time there is a MAF sensor out which I will be changing as that could also be the cause. That also makes sense to me as it solves at full running temp. I have had runnings with throttle position sensor in my last car which did tend to put it in limp mode on the odd occasion, so I am very much aware on parts like that simply for the fact it is not a physical moving part but just a resistor that sends signal. I will keep posted once the sensor is changed as I will be doing it under warranty as there is only a few months left on it.

That never crossed my mind and you may have a very good point. However one example I could give which seems odd to me. I can do the same 150 mile journey 2 times in 3 days. It will always do it on the way back after going down a certain hill. Surely it is not meant to regen that often is it? And after a long journey giving it some along the way which will kick out most of the soot anyway. But I will do a bit more research into that one as it does sound plausible. Thanks for that.

This very wet weather has been causing a few cars to do silly things re the gearbox. I had one where when you went down a long hill it locked up and stayed there till going to N and back to D. this is on a tiptronic box. As long as the car was driven every day it was perfect.

Mine is driven every day but that with the regen does somewhat make sense to me. It will upshift and downshift fine but only to 5th and after like a mile it will upshift to 7th as normal. No need to turn off the car or go into N and then back to D etc.

We have had3 to 4 post on this, this year and never before, one indie thought that perhaps a tactile switch sticking, just no easy to work out.

You can do the test that I did: try to hold steady the RPM between 1000 to 2000 RPM and move slowly.(try to move in 200RPM increments up from 1000 and down from 2000) As I sad before, mine had an inconsistent gap - by that I mean that I could not hold steady the 1400 RMP mark or the 1600 rpm mark.
I just try to help.
Best

In regards to the juddering in the lower gears I have had the adaptations on the box reset and for now at least it seems to have sorted itself out. Have not been able to feel it. It could have been a case of it was trying to get into lower gear and it was indecisive about it. At least if that is all good its one less ting to worry about.
