Hullo Gary,

Interesting question, and one I wrote to Mercedes in Germany about late last year

They were firm in their reply: that LPG would lead to engine damage in the medium / long term. which is why they will not offer dual fuel cars from new. Unfortunately they did not reply to my follow up question about exactly what (& why ) LPG would cause problems.

I'd be very interested in any information on this as LPG is gaining ground every day it seems.

Steve.

Hello Steve,

Many Thanks for your reply, I never heard of any long term damage to the engine with LPG, but in some country, like Austrilia, they use LPG for their taxi.... I still not understand...

In fact, many resercher are investigating the possiblilty of Dual fuel engine, and LPG is one of the fuel source they use.

but anyway, thanks for your reply,

and have anyone hear of anything or know anything about LPG engine?

LPG

Have been running my S280 on LPG for 2 months now, 10k miles as a long distance taxi, no problems so far 22mpg 30p a ltr. Works out cheaper than my W210 diesel.

Hello,

Many Many Thanks for the reply, LPG generally is cheaper the Petrol and Diesel, most of the reason is because of Tax!

The advantage of LPG is the low emission, and it's high energy value, high octane number, which about 110 RON, so it could run with higher compression ratio, hence, to improve the thermo efficiency; that's why so many engineer and resercher keep doing reserch about the possibility of LPG vehicle.

But do u think the LPG vehicle are under power and torque, compare with the petrol engine? are there any big difference??

LPG

I have a Mitsubishi Galant V6 that was converted two years ago and has now done nearly 100k on gas. In general running there is no obvious difference in performance. When the tank is nearly empty the accleration is very poor but thats about it. I have a relatively small tank which combined with my av 22/23 mpg (most of my driving is fast urban) means I only get 200 -220 range. I can easily do that in a day, of course I still have a further 400 miles if the petrol tank is full.
If there is a problem it is the petrol stations, they only have two pumps at most and if they go wrong it seems to take a while to get them fixed.
The Mitsubishi used to be a workhorse/family car but now just get used for work. I certainly do not regret the conversion particularly as I aim to run it into the ground (should be good for 250k, I hope).
Not so sure that I would convert the Mercedes though - W reg CLK 320. I only intend to keep it another year and main dealers are very sniffy about LPG

Regards

Ho Hum - knew I forgot something!

I suspect I am one of the least technically minded people to visit this site, though I did manage to refill my windscreen washer tank the other day.

However if you do need a bit of technical advice I would suggest a vist to
http://www.lpgforum.co.uk you will generally find people or companies involved with installation who are happy to share their opinions or experience.
