C180 Automatic 1996
Hello,
I dont like starting my first post with a problem but I have a 1996 C180 1.8 Petrol Automatic Mercedes Benz.
This gearbox hasent got a dipstick.
The car went into "limp mode" 6 months ago whilst driving - 2nd gear and Reverse are all thats available.
The Autotransmission fluid and filter were changed about a year ago (the car went perfect before and after this) - there was a clip on the old filter but none on the new, could the new filter have slipped and caused this problem?
There is no malfunction light on the dash.
I am looking forward to getting her polished up and showing her off again!!

Any advice no matter how small may help as my main dealer can offer no help.

Has your dealer read any fault codes?
Sound like limp mode, anyones guess as to what's causing it (without a readout)

Hello and welcome,, why not use a piece of curtain wire and test the level,,,it should read 5.6cm up the wire with the engine temp up to 80c

Welcome to the forums..

The main dealer is quite a bit away - I can bring it to a local garage with dianostic equipment and a lift - I think I'll get him to change the transmission oil and filter anyway

Good Tip - Thank you- That sounds great.
Anyidea how much fluid and what grade of fluid should be in that gearbox if I have my local garage change the filter and fluid?

Hi again,
How can I be sure this box is in my car?
The list only seems to give a 'new 7.5' listing , what about a oil change?

As you will have a torque converter drain plug it will take ½ liter lees than from new,,some oil will be in the cooler and journals

A good battery would have a standing over night voltage of 12-12.5 volt,, most cars have a running voltage of between 13.8 and 14.2 volts, depending on the state of the battery.

Starting blips are when the voltage falls too low for the ECU's to re set

Am I right in assuming that Limp Mode can be caused by a fault in many other systems - not just the gearbox.

If that's the case then I'd say that you'd need to read the faults - best thing would be to clear the fault list and then go for another drive and read the faults again - the fault that's causing the limp will re-appear.

Yes to the above. It is unlikely to be a duff gearbox that will require replacement.

It depends on the colour and the smell of the fluid,,if it smells burnt,,then change it,,the colour should be a brownish red.

The leak will be the pin bush plug and easy and common to fix

Hi, I havent got the fault codes read yet. No fault light showed on dash - but the mechanic should be able to access it with his diagnostic.
Regards Morgan.
