I have an S-class 2001 model (W220) with keyless go. To lock the car I should just be able to press the button on the door handle for a couple of seconds but one by one over the last 12 months this function has failed on all but the rear nearside door. If this door also gives up, I will have to revert to using the remote key:( The function

Can I safely use switch cleaner?

Any suggestions gratefully received ...

This is an unusual one, and I use key less go, I am wondering if moisture has got in, but this has never been asked before.
By all means try switch cleaner, the non drying types are the best, you cannot do any harm.

You may have to drop the lock to get to the switch

Thanks for the advice, Malcolm - will give it a go.

Is it a big job to drop the locks and will I need specialist tools, do you know? Would I need to strip the door from the inside to get at them?

I think that the best thing that I can do is to print you off the worksheets for this job

I had this problem a few months back.
I tried the switch cleaner and it didn't work it's a sealed unit.
you'll have a broken wire in the hinge on the handle, replace the handle unit (the bit you pull) £115 for mine yours will be similar.

Thanks Dave for that info, I have sent him only the info on removing the handle, and door liner, so at least he can still do this.

Thank you again Dave

I didn't need to remove the door panel on mine as there's a black plug at the side of the trim in the door - behind the handle, remove the plug and there's a torx screw appro 70mm into the door so you need a long series driver to reach it - I think it was a T25.
Undo that and the handle releases from the frame and it just pulls away from the door, lift the hinge end from the panel and tease out the wiring and there will be a plug where you can disconect the handle and change it for a new one - this is on the E class W211.

how did you get on? I believe S500 and CL500 should have the same setup, as I'm having same issues.
