my w140 s320 1994 has now completely cut out while driving once too often. it has done it about 4 or 5 times last time needing towing home after shutting down on a high street!!!.
its done it over the last 4 or so years about once a year. while driving the engine will all of a sudden without any warning just shut down. a couple of times it has started staight away again, sometimes ive been a minute or so switching on and off till it goes, last time it didnt start until i had just been towed home, i can turn the ignition on end electricly everything will work even the engine turnes over but will not start, the only tel tell sign is that the dash lights are very dimly light and flicker eraticly, then al of sudden on another turn of the key all is well again...luckily its not happened on a motorway..i wouldnt like to experience that at 80 miles an hour..if i cant find the answer its going to be one less s class on the road...

anyone have any ideas...or anyone know a merc auto electrician around enfield..north london.

thanks for any help you give

regards
Simon

Simon the fuel pump relay is known to be suspect on these cars, the car also has a crankshaft position sensor that could do the same thing, but not that common on these engines, and the instant restart does point to the fuel pump relay

Have you checked the wire harnessess around the engine as this could be a [very] intermittent short or cable break somewhere?

The symptoms certainly sound as though power to the ignition is missing for that short time that it won't start.
