I have a 2001 SLK 200 manual. In June it started to drive really flat as though it had lost all its power/air intake was not correct and then a few days later the engine management light came on. My local garage plugged it in and huge number of codes came up including exhaust codes. However when it was unplugged it regained its power so i drove it around again. A week later it happened again so i took it back and we replaced a few sensors. It drove fine and off i went again. It then happened again a few weeks later so we changed an exhaust valve, drove it around again for a few weeks and then it went flat again. Its driving me mad - does anyone have any ideas what this is - i really dont want to pay to take it to a main dealer?
Thanks
Lucy

Hi and welcome

You need to find a good local independant with a star machine and go from there.

Do you know if they used a star machine to diagnose the fault

The reason i ask is other aftermarket diagnostic machines dont always pick up fault codes so it could be the one that is causing the main problem that it has missed. Do you know what the fault codes were and what parts were actually were replaced. My guessing would be there is probably a fault with the secondary air injection system

hello lucy, sorry to hear of your problems. if you want us to help further a list of those fault codes might help. when you say the exhaust valve was changed, do you mean it was done with the cylinder head removed? there are a few common faults that might affect your car, but it will be hard for us to advise further without a a little technical info. failing that, if you give us an idea of your general location then we may be able to suggest a specialist in your local area.

Would this be the valve behind the head exhaust valve, the one that blocks up???

i would guess so.

if this is a 111 with the p0410 fault code then it really could be many things. MB have suggested the three valves involved in the air injection, as well as the recirculating flap and even the O2 sensor - i never enjoy these problems! the real issue with p0410 logging is the sesitivity, the ecu needs to see less than 50mv within 20 seconds (or something like that), if it was 150mv within 60 seconds it would be far less tricky to achieve.
