Hi posted a link earlier really do need help.
We have a vaneo 1.7 cdi ambiente diesel automatic.this car has been into the garage quite alot over the last few months due to creaking noise which then went to a squeaking noise, the brakepads were replaced.we then had smoke coming from underneath the car which was oil splashed underneath.as soon as the car is filled with oil within 24hrs the car shows no oil on the dipstick.the garage cannot find where the oil leak is coming from.
After getting the car back for the garage it seems to struggle getting in and out of gear and shakes violently from side to side.the garage have now said that the gearbox needs replacing and it maybe where the oil leak is??
They have quoted £1500-£2000,we have a friend who can fit a gearbox in if we can find one which after spending the whole day online and the phone isn't easy!!!evetually found one which will be £748 inc vat this is from an aclass.
Would really like some advice and help many thanks fay :)

Hi, In the absence of anybody else coming up with any suggestions, I'll put in a few pointers that might help you get on track,

First of all......who is giving you this advice? Is it a MB Dealer or a specialist in MBs and particularly A Class / Vaneo? Is the oil loss from the engine or gearbox? I'm struggling to understand how the brakes could be connected to the oil loss problems; however, they could cause the squeaking noises mentioned.

I'm actually thinking that there might be a major engine / turbo problem and this is the cause of the violent shaking that you mention. That being the case, an automatic will struggle in any gear.

My advice would be to get the car to an independent MB Specialist for a second opinion before you spend any money on a gearbox. If you mention where you are based on here, somebody may be able to make a recommendation.

Please let us know how you get on and if you get it fixed.

Regards,

Ernie

Hi Ernie thakyou so much for that. Its a MB specialist he use to work for Mercedes now has own garage. They think the oil leak may be coming from the gear box,so far we haven't had any engine probs touch wood!!The brakes pad needed replacing as did the discs due to being worn out.
My husband topped up the oil onlly the night before going into the garage when the mechanic put the dip stick in it showed no oil when he looked under the car it was splashed all underneath. He took it for a run down the road and said to us that we weren't kidding when we said it was shaking. He said that because of this oil leak eventually the gearbox will eventually seize up as the oil is going out the car at such a fast rate.We live in wellingborough northants.Cheers Fay :)

Oil Leakage Problems

Hi Fay,
I'm still a bit confused as to where the oil is leaking from.....Is your hubby topping up the engine or the gearbox as there is not normally a dip-stick on the gearbox? What colour is the oil that's leaking? If it's gearbox oil, it would normally be red or green, although as the A Class / Vaneo is a CVT box (certainly the petrol version is), it might be different.

I'm still hoping that somebody who knows more about these things than me will chip in soon, as it's clear that your car has big problems, which I'm still thinking might be turbo related.

Somebody might be able to suggest a specialist in Northants who could give a second opinion.

Sorry that my experience is limited, but hopefully somebody else will help soon.

Ernie

Ernie:Cheers for your help the oil is leaking red but when topping up in the engine its not staying in there. The mechanic said it was dry as a bone when he checked which i thought he said was a dipstick but i know vaneos have a bung(even though my husband had topped up the day before, it shows how quick it was coming out)
On another note from all the other threads,Why does everyone think i'm slating the garages name???I'm not, i'm merely saying the leak has been there a long time which they were aware of and cannot detect it!!We keep taking it in telling them that no matter how much we top up its gone within 24 hrs or less, now they say the oil thats leaking is red so will have to dismantle the gearbox to find out.Having spoke to loads of garages, mechanics and advice on here everyone says the same thing why can't the leak be detected??!!So no matter how good a garages name my problem still stays the same which is why i came on here :For advice and help, not to slander a garages good name(which i'm not)simply just asking a question.

Oil Leaks

Sorry Malcolm....There's obviously a bit of history here that I am unaware of; but, from the info given, it seems that the oil is transferring from the engine to the gearbox which means there is an engine problem somewhere. Never heard of anything like this, although I once drained the sump of a 100E through a faulty wiper vacuum motor!

Anyhow, hope it gets sorted!
