A few days ago I had a check engine light come up. I called the AA straight away and they came with in the hour. They plugged in and scanned the entire vehicle through the OBD port. The engineer said there was virtually nothing wrong with the engine and that it’s pretty much as healthy as could be. He sent me the report which had the results from the diagnostic test:
Patrol found the following fault code/ s: System : Engine Control - 76W / Diesel CDI D Delphi Status :2054 - Fuel-temperature sensor. Error Message : Open circuit/positive short. Error Sporadic.

Could literally anyone with a clue what that means tell me, I’ve already been to 2 garages who have said the engine is fine, but the light continues to come on occasionally. Really appreciate the reply’s
- Archie.

Hi Archie, welcome.
Afraid I can't help much with the code but where in the country are you, maybe we can point you in the direction of an independent specialist that has STAR diagnostics which are the Mercedes specific diagnostics where as the AA guy will use a generic reader that doesn't communicate with mercs properly

I’m Located in Central London, Islington to be specific. Don’t mind traveling for an hour each way. Thanks - Archie.

Not to good on London distances I'm afraid but Wayne Gates in Harrow, has an excellent reputation here, they do get very busy but try giving them a call they may be able to squeeze you in for a diag.
When you have the EML on do you noticeably difference in the way the car is, does it drop into limp mode or similar?

Thank you, I’ll give them a call :).
The EML light isn’t always on. There are some days where the light stays off completely, but there are others where it stays on for the whole day. There is absolutely no change in engine power or acceleration when the light appears back on. This is why I’m so confused...

P2054 can have many meanings (its a cam sensor on M271 engines for example but means something entirely different on other engines). Get it read by STAR (Wayne Gates uses this) to get the correct description and go from there.

Error message related to 2054-007 states: “The fuel temperature sensor on line to B50 is open circuit or shorted out” or similar. In my case the sensor still had about 1.6 kOhm resistance and 3 kOhm seems to be recommended, but anyway, I changed the part and have no more problems.

Take those fat air pipes off so you can see and work on the fuel temp. sensor. Pull out pin of clip RH side, remove (twist) pin in middle and on LH side squeeze edges in at connection to air filter pipe. Have new part ready from Aliexpress for $25. Ask Dr Google for photos of location of sensor. Remove electrics. Take 19mm tube spanner out of your plumbing kit or use a very deep socket as 19mm ring is not easy to use as there is no room. Install new sensor, suggestion is 23 Nm torque.

No more 2054-007 error on diagnostic or similar. No more “Engine Fault” light on just before your next service is due!

This error is also allied with the 2054-00 error: "The analogue/digital converter of the CDI control unit N3/9 is faulty" - not so. Your ECU is not stuffed. The software has no clue if it is the temp. sensor or the chip in the ECU converting the temp. sensor’s analogue signal to digital, so it lists both.

It must be a comedian who pays Google to suggest “Faulty Ozone Sensor” for this error, as Mercs may have two oxygen sensors in front and back of the catalytic converter, but definitely no ozone sensors!
