Help with Mercedes Specialist Finder

Hi. I live near Hitchin, North Herts/Beds border. Has anyone got ant experience with www.prestigemotorsofhertfordshire.co.uk/ ? They're on the specialist finder.

Also, Welwyn Merx? They're a bit of a drive for me but not too far so I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Where ever I go, I'll be sure to post quotes and let you know how I get on.

Hi, I used their MOT service for the SL once and found them to be very professional. A bit pricey on the tyre front, so I sourced my own. I also used them for a small issue on the BMW but don't have enough personal experience of major works other than hearing good things from others who have used them that live in the area.

Thanks. I'll almost certainly use prestige motors as they're local and there's only one way to find out what they're about.

Took my A124 in for a health check at W.D.M Cars (Aldridge near Sutton Coldfield/Walsall) today. Very good service, the technician allowed me to see my car up on the lift from underneath to show me a couple of things (positive, not just negative/'work needs doing' things) and just a general chat about all things Mercedes. Very knowledgeable, didn't push any work or looking for work. A couple of expected things I will have done (some worn bushes and corroded brake pipes and the, expected to need doing, front disc/pads are OK for now) could easily have quoted to do them.

Very good set-up and they'll be seeing my car again soon for the remedial works

I have used Millenium Motors in Bedford as they are closer to me. I have also had a chat with the owner at Prestige in Letchworth and his prices for servicing seemed fair. Give him a call and see what you think.

A little late in the day for you, but I'm in Herts on the Beds border too. I don't have a Merc currently but after a few issues with a couple of local places, I was recommended Terry and his team in Harrow. Yes it's a bit of a trek, but the team never let me down and I trusted them implicitly. They really know their stuff. I had a 2005 SL that he looked after and remedied a roof leak caused by another garage, amongst many things. If I go back to a Mercedes, which is the plan, I won't hesitate to go back there.

There is two good ones in Nottingham, MB Centre out near the racecourse, then MercServ on Radford road, both as good as each other but similarly priced, MB Centre is certainly the bigger of the two but still do proper diagnosis like mercserv, they were my go to when I lived there as it was then east to catch the park and ride into town for work

I Emailed MBCentre with a small detailed list of work required & got a fast reply from a principal. He was helpful but would not give their hourly rate & insisted on a full diagnosis before being prepared to give even rough estimate of cost of work.

Not completely surprising, they have been caught in the middle before where they have an estimate and then found more work that has to be done and the owner won’t take their word for it

Its very difficult to give a rough estimate on some jobs. Prices for parts constantly changing, and some jobs may have 5-6-7-8 common snag points that end up making the job much bigger.

In the above case, if we quote worst case scenario where everything goes wrong, we can appear uncompetitive. If we quote further the other way, and something goes wrong then it can be hard for the customer to budget and give a bad experience.....

An update re Arrow Fleet Maintenance in Cobbs Wood, Ashford. They have ceased trading, but their main mechanic Darren starts work at DP Vehicles on the old A20 a couple of miles Folkestone side of the Smeeth turning tomorrow. Have emailed asking if they also have full Star/Xentry as Darren had at AFM, waiting for a reply. Was also told that DP are hoping to become an MB specialist indie. Darren has looked after both my cars for a few years now and has been fantastic, so although DP are 12 rather than 8 miles away (and a bit more interesting to get to with both cars) I'm hopeful. I'd happily use AMF at Paddock Wood, but it's a hike and a half to get to Alex (who is excellent, just close to an hours drive away!) - but if all else fails that's my fall back position!!
