Well, the one I have is very similar to the one I have. For me it was just a case of getting a lower profile jack, which I acquired today .... :D

Purchased this 2 Tonne jack today for £90. RRP is £120, but I have the use of a friends trade card which is awesome for tools!

It's pretty substantial and feel like I will have a much easier (safer) time lifting my cars. I still have to figure out how to operate the release vale.

Just be careful with the surface you’re using the jack on. The rear casters can jam easily on tarmac and then the jack doesn't move as it should when you’re using it and damage can result...
If you have to use it on tarmac get a piece of hardboard to roll it on.

Yup - Already been there. The castors are smaller on the smaller jack. I am already minus one jack pad on the E Class.. I think it will pop back in though.

The castors are a bit bigger on this one and I have found a concretes area to work on. The older jack also used to sink a little in the tarmac :eek:ops

A mate had a Clark 3 ton jack from Machine Mart. The valve to lower was either fully shut or fully open .... there was very little in between, so gently lowering your car was an acquired art. Not a jack I'd recommend.

The cheap basic Halfords one feels like that. Not good for intricate lowering onto jack stands.

Agreed.. Need to be super sure.

I will only get under once there is a wheel placed under a sill.

Another vote for SGS engineering , I've got a little jack (2T? and a big one (3+?) which will jack up the front or back of the car from the diff , or the front jack pad . Good quality kit

Surely as long as you have strong axle stands in place it will be safe?

Absolutely - but not getting underneath is safer still :)

To be fair - the gear i have was bought to work on my old VW T5 (written off hence the E Class!) but now i have neither the enthusiasm or incentive to get underneath: i have a good indy for that :)

I agree.. safety first. Part of the anxiety for me is lifting the car off the ground.. I didn't like the small jack and how it creaked etc so the bigger brother should make things a little easier.

I won't get under the car unless there is a wheel under at least one sill.

A wheel? Okay. Have I been risking things then?!!

Yea I stick a wheel under a sill.. So if the car slips of the stands or whatever then the wheel should at least catch it and not squash you.

Hard to arque against such an easily implemented safety measure imho.

Ditto.
I've had a stand sink into what I thought was a hard surface before now. Also had a board under a stand split before now.
Both times doing a 4x4 with lots of clearance but it's still very worrying.

Okay. So I've been exceedingly lucky then?!! But then I am exceedingly lucky!!!
