have been gradually licking my E300d (270k miles) into shape with new (recon) engine, mounts etc and she is now getting very smooth and a lovely drive, but recently developed a loud vibration on tickover. This appears to be mainly associated with the power steering pump, with most of the noise coming from that. Have replaced belt tensioner damper to no avail, everything else seems to turn ok, even the pump although there is slight play in that. I ran the engine briefly without the belt on and it seems fine. Is replacing the pump my only option? if so how difficult, any safety issues etc. Help would be appreciated as no money for cars at pres!

I don't know if you can, but see if you can tighten/replace that pulley first?

The pump might be fine.

As Parrot really, the shaft of the pump cant bend, but the pulley can.

do you mean the tensioner pulley wheel or the one attached to the pump?
