STAR is the MB test set that can read all fault codes and program the electronic ECUs and SAMS.

All of the cars have the high speed CAN BUS, a data system that goes round and round, with information that records the functioning of all parts of the car, this info is needed by the SAM ecu's where all of this info is stored and used. If a SAM has failed, then as in your case (i think it has) then the EIS circuit cannot find the signals that it needs to enable the key to be turned further. Once plugged into STAR it will say where the signals have stopped, and the component involved

Local Mechanic hooked it up to his machine...... and it wouldn't give a reading. Car is in a imobalised state and therefore won't link up to show the faults.

From the info my wife passed on to me (which ill take with a pinch of salt!), i don't think it must have been.

It must have been a Diagnotisc Machine that the guy uses on everything not a STAR one that is Merecedes specfic.

I think its got to go to the dealers.......... bye bye money.

Don't suppose anyone knows my rights as i bought it from a local dealer just a month ago ??

I would tell the dealer where you bought the car of your actions, this is only fair. You should not threaten anything at this stage , but just say you expect some redress on this as you have only had the car for 4 weeks

Finally got word back from the garage..... Seems like it was the EIS sensor which has failed.

That needs replacing (£300ish), then a new key (£250ish) plus the labour for 2 days work.

Thank god the garage is footing the bill.

If it was an SL 230 you would feel worse.. I do not believe the 2 days labour,,they said this so that you would leave a tip

Is this a common fault with these then ??

Not really,,,this has been a very odd year on this forum as around 15 cars in the last few months have had weird EIS switch faults and most needing to be replaced.

I have never known so many to go down acorss a wide range of cars

Odd year Malcolm ??? .... Since Sunday last, I've had an unresponsive key when unlocking my car. Typically 15 minutes later, I eventually get a Key Fob response. I've no recognition in the ignition either for that time.

Than, all of a sudden, she decides she's ready to go and all back to normal!

I'm sure it's not the key [thanks to you digital camera check ... :D] Once I get going, the key operates as it should.

Once I get the car started, during the rest of the day I have no further issues at present.

Am I too at the early stages of EIS failure
?????

From reading on here [particularly http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=55108&highlight=EIS+morning] I fear the worst. I'm intrigued about the 'hairdryer' approach.

Still, 10 years old car do need some TLC .......

Safe Driving

Mines all back to normal now.

Cost the 'garage' £715 for the replacement EIS + a new key + Labour.

Nice new key though. Make the car look old now though !

Tell me, i have the 2 old keys in excellent condition. How much do these averagely go for on ebay ?

and one more quick question....

I want to replace the stereo (audio 10) with a more iphone compatable stereo. Is there any special cables that are required before purchasing a new stereo ?? the one im after is http://www.clarionworld.co.uk/stock/fz409e.asp

Thanks again for all your help.

This forum is becoming a favourite !

Your car is a 203.

You could donate your old keys to the forum where the parts will help fix others who have broken keys
