Right then,

Time to come out of the shadows; as you can see from the name I'm Irish and I drive a recently-purchased ML270 CDI?

This all started several months ago when I wanted a C220 CDI Estate, hence "Irish CClass", as my mid-life-crisis car but while I was making up my mind, some genius bought it out from under me. However, in my quest for an estate, the ML appeared, mis-classified, and under encouragement from my boss (SWMBO), I investigated it and thought about it and bought it before someone else did.

It's July 2002, Automatic, 2 Owners, 63,000 miles, good service history thought not all MB, Jasper blue and bog-standard. Wagons with engines of this size are relatively inexpensive in Ireland because of the punitive road tax; it will cost €1,164 per annum to tax it.

So far it's no thirstier than my SAAB 9-5 2.0lpt was on petrol but because diesel is historically cheaper than petrol in Ireland, fuel is costing me less now. Diesel is currently 98cent or 88p per litre and I'm getting 29mpg on a 60-mile return commute most of it at 70 mph.

I have to say that the spirit of co-operation and assistance on this forum is superb and cetainly better than some others I've visited!

I hope I can be of at least some assistance to others in the future!

Mike

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum. As you say, it is a friendly place and a very safe environment in which to ask questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question - if the issue puzzles you it almost certainly confuses others too.

And we obviously can't question your "green" credentials!

Hello and welcome, it is a great forum as you say, and we are lucky in having so many good people.

Pleased that you have found the ML, and please join in Mike where ever you wish :D:D

Hi and welcome. There is something nice about being sat up high. That road tax bill is awful. They'd be an outcry if that came to britain, still your fuel is cheaper than ours

So if I take a holiday in Ireland, it would be like getting a discount in my UK car

When the exchange rate is "normal", around 66 to 69p to the euro, that road tax isn't as bad; it would be around £800 a year but the diesel was always cheaper than petrol over here so we have a distinct advantage there.

Also, the main stealers are SUPERB at writing invoices! Because of the relatively low volume of MBs on the Irish roads specialists are few and far between and a lot of the independents don't have the gear to diagnose faults.

Good job the forum is up and running!

Welcome,

Not been in the free state for years, used to come over to Belfast and look after my late grandparents house when they were over in Scotland and would go down to Dublin for a couple of days.

How is the main Belfast-Dublin road now? used to be a very wide single carriageway that resembled the whacky races and it was every man for himself !!

Good man Panzer,

The main Dublin-Belfast road is now Motorway from Dublin city to the border, top class "A" dualcarriageway from the border to Newry, and Newry to Lisburn is currently under construction.

It will eventually be Euroroute "E01" from Belfast to Rosslare Harbour.

Mike

ps It's still every man for himself because there are Gob****es who regard the overtaking lane as a "fast" lane even if their speed is lower than the legal limit.
