Just wondering what happens after my 169 A150 Classic SE. Another one? On the other hand....am beginning to be tempted (rationally or irrationally?) by,wait for it, Skoda Octavia. Just seems like a lot of car for the money.

Having lit the blue touch paper, will now retire to v safe distance.:)

I know a couple of people who have the Octavia and they praise them to the highest.
They seem to be well built and reliable.

If the lack of a 3 point badge isn't as issue then certainly go and have a test drive, or better still hire one for a few days

I know three owners of Octavias.

Build quality probably better than MB
No rust problems
Good dealer attitude
mechanicals bomb proof

no brainer

It's a sad state of affairs but I'd have to agree.

If badge snobbery is an issue you could always stick a star on the bonnet. :)

A shrewd choice. Skoda are part of the VW Audi Group. They are also the part which wins the intra-group competitions on quality, and possibly profitability. In all such groups there is a common parts bin, from which all cars are made. So a Skoda will be an amalgam of parts from the bin, screwed together in a way which makes the others (Audi, VW, Seat) struggle to compete.

Although, for political and marketing reasons, it may not have all the toys of the more expensive brands, it is nevertheless "The thinking man's Audi".

A good choice - we look forward to hearing how you get on.

I had a Skoda Octavia new in 06. Don't go bananas with the spec (like I did) and they are a lot of car for the money. One or two issues but I think the cars and dealers ought to be better 3 years on.

Must agree - Skodas are good cars. The wife has a Fabia Estate - no problems on or since delivery. Car is now 6 years old. Very economical, cheap to service, good dealer, helpful, nothing goes wrong. Can't praise them enough. MB and their dealers would do well to take some tips from Skoda and their dealers. Everyone I know who owns a Skoda praises the marque.
