Hello

After a lot of searching and nearly buying a BMW i went with the C270 cdi, its a 51 plate Avangarde and what can i say with this being my first prestige car i am over the moon. although before buying the car i did do my research and i also Browsed this forum alot as i was first going to go for the w210 320cdi but heard of far to many horror stories regarding reliability and rust issues. So would just like to say hello to everybody.

Just a few questions, I have read though the manual twice and still do not understand. what does the following mean and how exactly does it work. EC REST, AUTO on the climate control panel, also the car has done 90000 miles and has been serviced every 20000 miles at main dealer and always had service B done does this seem right? Thanx

EC - Economy or to put it another way Aircon compressor off
REST - Residual heat - The heater can continue to run when the engine is off. A pump runs to circulate the heat and the fan runs on slow. Keeps you warm when waiting for the Mrs outside the supermarket.
Auto - Automatic - aircon on and run off the temp settings

20,000 intervals are a bit heavy. Standard intervals on the 270 (mine anyway) is at 10,000. With good quality oil and/or regular top ups, the assyst may allow you to go up to around 17k but generally no more.

"A" services are basically oil changes but if it decides you don't need one, either because the oil is still clean or has been replaced, you still can't avoid the big service (B) at 17k. However, if the A has actually been done unofficially at 10k, you'd get the next service due another 10k down the line and it would be a B. Sounds to me like they did their own unnoficial oil change around 10k and had the dealer do the B's at the next 10k. The book should show how many miles the service was overdue so if it 3,000 miles over you didn't get an earlier A, if its around 0 then it was probably done and just not recorded.

I also have a C270 and it just had it's first service at 18500 miles. Just before the service was due the indicator changed from A to B.
I would guess that zaki's car has done mainly 'motorway' miles - there was someone else on one of the forums recently who ran a C Class as a company car, doing lots of miles, and that car always requested B services.

After the service indicator was reset, mine showed 13000 miles to the next service - that should stretch out or reduce, depending on the cars use. To get 13,000 miles the car has to have fully synth oil, otherwise I think the mileage will reset to 10,000 miles.

Welcome to the 'club'. I bought a 51 Avantgarde c200 about 6 months ago. Like you i also browsed this board. I have to say although the car has been scratched since i got it, it is still amazng... being my first 'proper' car.

I also drive a Honda Civic N Reg VTEC but the Merc is just different class. Hope you enjoy it as much as we all do here.

Just out of interest... how much did you pay for it? Whats the spec like?

Agreed Rory, 17.5k and perhaps even 18.5k are achievable with fully synth oil and careful motorway mileage. However, I have never heard of anyone getting to 20k and the chances of doing it consistently are pretty close to nil IMO. Hence I suspect it has had regular 10k changes, just not documented. It was something I have considered. Having an intermediate change at 10k at an indie (A service) without stamping the book but still resetting the assyst, and then going into the dealer every other time (for the B) and so keeping FMBSH - at least on paper. It effectively keeps the Mobilio and corrosion warranty up to date, but saves a few hundred each year. (Actually the more I think about it, the more it sounds like a good idea!)
I agree though it does switch to B over a certain point so it is possibly genuine, but at 20k IMO unlikely.

I am very disappointed with the current interval on my E270. Given that she does 65 motorway miles per day and even with another 25 traffic miles each day, I should have seen better than 10k since the last visit. Hopefully the next oil change will improve things. I intend to insist on fully synth this time.

Now do I get the book stamped .....?

I really only use mine for long motorway trips - usually 100-200 miles each way. When I got the car, it'd done 6000 miles, and showed service required at 14000. It gradually stretched out to 18500. I actually took it in a bit early - I've never put a drop of oil in it, and I was getting concerned about the oil condition.

You plan to do intermediate oil changes sounds valid (you could buy an oil extractor and DIY very easily, or find a reliable fast fit place - they often do them for less than the oil cost). However, I wonder if not following ASSYST (the dealer would think the A services hadn't been done) would mess up the warranty and Mobilo access?
