Welcome depends what you are comparing it with, but I don't find them noisy.
Check you auto gearbox oil has been changed every 37K miles or 5 years which ever come first, often missed.

Hello and welcome. I’m think the 4 cylinder diesels have always been a bit more “agricultural” than the 6 cylinder ones.

We do hear about the occasional timing chain issues on the OM651 engine. A pronounced rattle jit’s after starting when cold is a sign of potential trouble which can be expensive to correct.

Hi and welcome to the forum :) The 2.1d engine can be a bit noisy but that is perfectly normal if you are talking about engine clatter at tickover :)

it's just a generally noisy engine which is fine just wanted to make sure was the norm.i have no rattle on start up or anything so all good so far and hopefully it stays that way lol.one thing I have found and not sure if just paranoid but at higher speed(motorway) I have a slight vibration through the steering wheel and underneath me if makes sense.i have had the front wheels balanced but hasn't really helped.im not sure if this is just me being a bit picky tho

OK thanks.the garage I bought it from told me that they would give it a "quick" service but can't trust them so going to book it into a merc specialist garage not to far from me and pay them to give it a good once over/proper service over the next couple of weeks.it has just gone over the 37000 mile mark so assuming it hasn't been done yet

You are looking at about £250 for a gearbox oil change, put your location up & someone will recommend a local Mercedes independent.
