Not saying it's the same on yours, but my W211 started to do this 4 months ago. It turned out to be the self cancelling pawl had broken off but was still in place so it would snag and then unsnag noisily.
It is part of the clock spring assembly. I bought a used squib assembly from eBay for about £50. It's airbag and steering wheel off to replace.
I drove it to test before refitting the airbag which brought up the SRS warning which had to be reset with a scanner.
Hi Thank you for responses I have had the steering in every position which hasnt made a difference. It does not have the smooth movement it should have when getting it to lock into position Will have to get it looked at but dread the main agents pricing if it is needed.
A further clue when I had the problem I mentioned was that as the steering returned to the centre position the broken piece flicked out of its caught position with enough force to cause the indicator to blink in the opposite direction.
Eg, returning from indicating and turning left the right indicators blinked 3 times.
If you say where you're based someone will probably be able to recommend an 'indy' ..... A independent Mercedes specialist who will be considerably cheaper.
I found a YT video that covered drilling through the indicator switch enclosure from underneath and installing a screw, but must have got the position slightly wrong because I damaged the circuit board. It was only when I got a replacement unit and removed the old unit that I discovered the cause, which was a broken plastic tab which turns with the steering wheel to cancel the indicator. How it could break is a mystery because it's 3mm thick and about 10mm wide. It's part of the clock spring assembly which luckily came with the replacement pod that I bought.
