Hi all, been signed up for a while and trying to educate myself about my car. W124 1995 E200, all running fairly smoothly, 170k, quite a bit thirstier than my previous E220 unfortunately but that's not the priority issue. The central locking and window electrics have suddenly gone nuts: started with windows randomly winding themselves down when parked; it has ended with no central locking working, windows having to be disconnected electrically, driver door unlockable (possibly due to mechanic's tampering), and the fuse that covers rear windows, seatbelt warning etc blowing and a smell of burning suggesting a short circuit. PO took out a couple of fuses it seems; door panels have been off before; sunroof not working (mechanically or electrically) and the fuse for that has been taken out too. Can anyone advise where to start looking please? - switch module near gearstick? comfort module (somewhere under back seats I hear?) thanks in advance. The goal is to get the locks and windows working... I see there are some similar problems listed but not any really close match. Any advice highly appreciated. Thank you.

From what you say it loks like comfort unit. You could remove it and check it on the bench for burning marks .But a lot of items run through it .If you get it repaired and dont check out the items that are faulty it will only go again. Not very informative as i dont have that part in my car .You have a big job on your hands sorry to say ..There are more informative members on the forum that can help more than i can Good luck .And welcome to the forum by the way.

Thanks for the replies. At least everything manually locks now and the windows stay shut, although it was a surprise not to be able to get the fuel door to open when trying to fill her up.. found the lever in the end. If anyone has any sparky knowledge in relation to these cars, I'd love to know if there was a standard procedure to narrow things down, as dreamer#2 says it's potentially a huge job...
cheers

assuming it's ok to now post the original query in the specific section in the hope that a specialist or two might spot it... best
