Murray.

Looking at the specs for the two, the SLK320 is a bit quicker to 60 (7.0 for the 230 and 6.8 for the 320) and the 320 is a lot smoother (although I do like the sound of the 230 on start-up, it sounds very meaty).

However, for that extra 0.2 secs and smoothness, you pay a premium in fuel consumption (24 mpg ave for 320, 28 ave for the 230) and (I guess) you get a heavier front end which makes a difference to handling.

Just one other thing, I know it's a bit of a cliche but, the manual box in those SLKs aren't very good and don't offer much extra in terms of performance over the auto which is so much nicer and will be easier to sell on in future.

If you're looking at the 320 because you're worried about the supercharger - don't - they're one of the most reliable you can but (good for 150K on average if not more).

Oh yes, nearly forgot, the 320 will cost more to service and might be more expensive to insure too.

Hope this helps

Try this link for reviews etc.

Iv'e got two 230K SLK's - 1998 and 2002, both have had problems, Tiptronic gearbox on the 02, and oil syphoning up the engine wiring on the 98. Both these cars are 4 cylinder and supercharged, the 320 is a 6 cylinder without supercharger. Performance differance between them isn't much, with the 320 slightly quicker and faster overall-pays yer money etc. still, great looking cars, and go well. Hope this helps. :D

YW - If it's a 6 speed manual, they're a lot better.

Hi EUREST, the Tiptronic gearbox is like the "paddle" gearchange - just flick the gearstick and it changes up and down the gearbox like a manual but without messing about with a clutch - I much prefer the Tiptronic to the standard auto, or the manual, you can really use the car's performance to it's best - try and get a test drive in one, you will be impressed

Normal dealer price around £13k with 50k miles

Your dealer wants £14,500 for the exact colour and spec you want and it has done only 24,000 miles. That's worth a grand of anyone's money. Say £14,000. And it has full MB service history giving you MobiloLife and free breakdown cover for you and your wife (costs £150 from the AA). Low miles and fullMBSH make it worth the loot in my book BUT most dealers build in at least a grand to lace the part ex deal and for haggling. You'll get it for under £14K. Good price.

320 versus 230 is purely a matter of taste. Seen threads raving about both. Personally I like bigger engines working less hard and I expect them to last longer. Performance is 'ample' for the UK whichever you get. Is it a dealer who will look after you after you buy?
