Hi, I have w210 1997 E230, the PS rack leaks in a horrible way (i add 1 L per 5 days), someone tell me to change the rack, but when the fluid level is ok, the rack works great.
my question is, i can't change the rack now, so if i change the seals, it does solve the problem periodically.

in other words, what is responsible of leakage ? the seals only ??

If the rack is leaking and replacing the seals solves the issue only for a short period then it is likely that the rack is worn and is damaging the seals, hence their short life.

A permanent cure would be to replace the rack. A reconditioned unit may do it.

When you replaced the rack seals did you remove it from the car? As with all of these things cleanliness is the key. A small amount of grit in the rack or corrosion on any of the moving parts will damage the seals.

You do need to wash down the steering components in order to see where the leak is or what is leaking, many seals are available for the upper and lower control head

I think there a few typo's in the post.
I think the question is, can I put new seals in ? and will it last ?
Clean rack then check for source of leak, if the rack looks undamaged worn or corroded then change the seals keeping it clean.

a theoretical question came to my mind, what happens if the level of PS fluid is higher than MAX ?

Probably no room for expansion, if no breather hole in the top it could push it out of a seal.

Keep in mind if you are loosing 1l of oil every 5 days whilst driving, then you are creating dangerous conditions for motorcylists on wet days!

I for one cannot advise you attempt DIY work on this very safety critical item - what happens of the steering jams when cornering?

A secondhand one would be safer.
