Hi & Welcome,

Firstly is your AC turned on? MB's have AC on as standard, If you press the switch (EC) and the light comes on the AC is switched off.
Is the compressor running - have a look under the bonnet. With the engine running have a willing assistant sit in the car and switch the AC on and off. You should be able to see the compressor starting and stopping.
If compressor not running then most likely the condensor has a hole in it.

On the ML's (at least MY2001 and before), you have to push the button in for A/C, whereas the C-Class, you push it in to turn Aircon off.... dont ask me why, Americans always do things differently....

I took my dash apart a while back to fit command, and there were 2 cables connected to the dials. It could be that the flimsy plastic couplings hodling these cables on have broken, locking your heat exchanger into heat mode. Checkout Blobcats advise, re:listening for the Air compressor engaging, it it engages, then look behind the dials. The wood fascia just unclips, but I cant remember how I pulled the dials out (needed because a bulb had blown, and not knowing where the bulb was, I pulled the whole thing out, disconnecting the cables!!!!)

Was that the same for the Austrian built ones?
I checked out a new ML and an R class recently and although they look more like the rest of the range now, inside you can still see the 'Americanisms'

Not sure on that, but I would assume so. I actually like the 'Push for On' method over the 'Push for Off', just confusing when you jump into different cars, kind of like the Japanese indicator stalk scenario.

Just for arguments sake I prefer the push off, not that I think you should push off ;). Less likely to leave the AC off and lose all of that nice gas.
Bit like the Americanism we have for the internet - forward slash and backslash. I would rather have a Backstroke than a Backslash any day of the week :p
