3 Ways.

1. Should have a green sticker in engine bay stating it needs MB 229.5 Low Ash oil.
2. Crawl under car and look at the exhaust you should see another cylindrical box before the main KAT.
3. Ring main dealer and ask them!

Steve I think you meant 229.51 for low ash oil.

I seem to remember someone, maybe S.Speed, saying he had the sticker under his bonnet although he didn't have a DPF.

Edit, I've just checked and my 320 has the sticker requiring 229.31 or 229.51 and the car is w/o DPF (thankfully).

As above, any ideas guys?

Colin.

If it is the old C220cdi (203 series) it doesn't have a DPF
If it is the new C220cdi (204 series) with the twin turbo engine it does have a DPF.

Ask the Service manager at your local dealer to be sure.

It is an 03 pre-facelift which means 203 I think, so no dpf then.
Thanks guys, good to know as she does lots of 10 mile trips to and from work in it.
Colin.

Strange, I have a C220 CDI S203 sat outside that has a DPF.

Wow. One of those cases where everyone has different information! I've just phoned a contact at MB who should know and he says: -
Simple rule the old 203 model doesn't and the new 204 C class does have a DPF.
BUT just from April 2004 BUILD DATE to aug 2005 if automatic it will have a DPF. If manual it will have a DPF if BUILT from April 2004 to Dec 2004. This is for C saloons. There are variations for estate etc. Best advice check with dealer or customer service.

On the newer engines, typically EU5 diesel engines have a DPF

Hmm...has anybody ever had a straight (and correct) answer off MB about anything? They don't even seem to know how ASSYST works.

Anyway, it's a moot point because the OP's missus's car is probably too old to have one, but, if I recall correctly, DPF was an option for a while as it lowered the tax for company car drivers. They weren't fitted as standard and very, very few older UK MBs have them.

One way to tell is if the exhaust pipes should look clean if it has a dpf.

It is usually made clear if a DPF is fitted because the oil issue (using low ash) is important. Although one of the reasons its come up here before is the dealers weren't using LA oil even in cars with DPFs.

They didnt fit them as standard, they were an "option". My W204 doesnt have one so your contact isnt correct. As I said ask Customer Service and provide your chassis number

My info is different. They were fitted as standard on 203's with the build dates I gave.
It is true that some build dates had DPF's optional.
My dealer and my source at MB say the EU5 engines in the 204 C class 220cdi's have DPF's standard.

There is clearly much confusion about this amongst dealers and owners as Rory said. And it is important as not using low ash oil can harm the DPF -so we all need to know whether we have one or not -and so do those who service our cars.

As an aside, there is similar confusion with the E class. I had an E class 270cdi in 2004. Some of the 270's had DPF's standard to meet new emissions regs. Earlier ones didn't. And the difference in fuel economy was considerable. Hence you see some delighted with the 270 economy and others far less so.

Yes but the oil grade given was wrong. And most dealers seem to be giving different answers.

Crawling under the car was sound advice!:D

From the VIN number or chassis number dealers can print off the list of what is fitted to the car. Is that the safest way other than getting down and dirty?
