I have never owned an auto before…

Now the question is this – I have taken advice on how to drain the fluid from the box and torque converter.

However – when replacing the fluid – should I check the dipstick while the engine is off and cold?

Or when it’s parked, running in ‘P’ or some other way??

Thanks!

The proper way to do check the fluid level in an auto box is ---Car engine and Gear box at normal operating temperature, car on level ground , Gear selector in Park with the engine running. Using the Dip Stick dip the Oil if required add oil through Dip Stick Tube in small amounts (1/2 litre at a time) Thats about it.

Check it hot in N or P leave it running and wait a minute or two for the oil level to reach its rest state before you check the fluid level.
If you are changing the fluid you need a new gasket and filter, be very very careful not to get any muck or lint in the transmission or troubles will be on their way.
Tighten the sump pan nuts to no more than the specified torque or the pan will distort and leak.
Drain both the box and torque convertor, remove the sump pan and replace the gearbox filter.
Im sure others will be able to fill in the details of which fluid and the quantity required, I suggest that for this job you use genunine MB bits.

If you've only just refilled, before you measure anything put the box in D, R, D, R, D, R, repeatedly until you feel the transmission start to pull against the parking brake.
