Anybody got a "how to" for checking/cleaning the EGR on a 2002 c220 cdi?

There appears to be a lot of threads where the answer is "clean the EGR". I cannot find one that gives me enough confidence to tackle the job.

I believe that I may need to clean mine, power is down, fuel consumption has increased, and I emit clouds of black smoke at over 3000 rpm.

As I have recently had all of my injectors refurbished and a new MAF, it points to the EGR (unless one of my refurbished injectors has gone faulty). As I have now done over 220K miles, it is likely to be very dirty, maybe sticking.

As I have never had to deal with an EGR before, I would appreciate if someone could tell me how to find it, what it looks like, and what I need to remove to get at it. Any suggestions about what to use to clean it? How fragile is it?

Pictures would be great.

Thanks

The quick clean answer is to remove the EGR actuation valave and liberally spray as much freeing oil..TS10, WD40, 3in1 easing oil, or whichever oil you prefer..let it sit for 5 or 10 mins and liberally spray again.. then connect everything up and afer a few mins warm up, a few good revs and a quick run should clear the cobwebs.....

Good answer...but the OP would like to know where the EGR actuation valve actually is.

It near the bulkhead. I got nabbed on my R170 petrol while working away from home in dusty M3. It cannot be cleaned but replaced, two of them. If you are not careful, it could snapped the tube and it even more expensive. Leave it to the expert. It costs me £260, done at MB Basingstoke.

Thank you for your reply. It not a lot sense make it do. (Even I can speak Dragonese!)

I note that you have now been banned from the "other" MB forum. They are convinced that you are indeed Dragon, who has been banned from both fori.

I think you may be on borrowed time.

How do you clean the AGR?

The two components to change are the purge valve and vent valve and they are near the bulkhead. I was told by MB Basingstoke if you are not careful removing the purge valve, then the tubing underneath the purge valve may break even done by an expert causing even more work.

I was telling you a story, it happened to me in 2007 when I was working away from home around Camberley when they were putting barriers beside the M3 motorway filling the motorway with a lot of dust. It was at that time the engine light of my slk R170 came on. I was robbed(nabbed) by MB Basingstoke of £340(260, can't remember) to replace the two components. It very common but not mentioned in the maintenance schedule.

For curiosity there is a charcoal canister in W202 and R170, is there one in the W211?

jasonyw, you are talking about the SAI system (secondary air injection) used on certain M111 compressor engines to help with cat heating and emission issues - nothing to do with egr as this system sends air into the exhaust, not the other way round.

You are in Stowmarket, aren't you?

How much will you do a change in auto fluid and filter for a W211?

5 speed, I know the answer now, thanks.

Is the £140 include the fluid, filter and gasket?
